Audi owners in here!

My last 2.0t FSI A3 did around 17mpg average in the two weeks I actually used it.

Having said that I was doing 150 miles a day at the time, plus a 600 mile run once a month, and now I do about 70 miles a week.

I've got the A3 2.0T and get 34-37mpg currently (better in summer) and thats 30 mins on the A47 overtaking wherever possible and trawling 20 mins through Leicester city centre.

I've always been impressed with the efficiency.

If it was stock, the 2.0tfsi is 200bhp not 280, and i got close to 40mpg out of mine over 2 years of use, and i was lead footed now and again. I never saw anything near 17mpg so yours must have been screwed.

Not stock. Stage 2+ Revo according to the paperwork. Not sure on turbo size. Really jekyll and hide car with S-Tronic, smooth and quick to change gear normally, really fast and mindblowing gearchanges when "on it". Used to pop flames out of the back on gearchanges at high RPM according to the guy following me!

How hilly is the A47? My general commute would be Dobwalls - Liskeard - Callington - Tavistock, full of valleys and curves.

How much are you looking at for a reasonable s3 these days? Seems the earlier 3 doors are now sitting about the same kind of money as ed30 mk5's ( though I'd imagine a good golf is easier to find at the money)

By reasonable I mean full Audi history, 1 or 2 owner, under say 70k, not messed around withwith either by way of engine or exterior, decent spec ( so nav really)

I remember you frequently posting quite the opposite. I wasn't going mad it seems..

Fair enough. At the time of that post I was past the limits of what most people could actually deal with in one go so a car that wanted to play up was the last straw.

The oil leak stemmed from a botched injector change by Audi - who then refused any blame because I'd taken the car somewhere else to repair.

The turbo, yeah fair one. Oil filter hadn't been changed which put pressure on the seals and they gave way.

It wouldn't go into gear after me going through a massive puddle I didn't see. I managed to free it eventually.

After all that, I stand by my "its a fine car" statement. I'm happy with it.

What's your budget? 8P2 (upto 2008) can be had for under 13k for good ones although id imagine most will be around your mileage limit.

I could spend 13k, don't know if I'd be willing to though. Would be far more comfortable at about ten. If that's what you're realistically looking at I probably won't spend much time looking at them.

I have a real problem feeling like any of these cars are any sort of "upgrade" from the e46....especially considering the outlay ( its worth realistically 3-3.5k I'd say).

A hatch would be useful though and I really really liked the last 8p s3 I drove. Went to see an ed30 but didn't drive it as it was sold, wasn't particularly impressed with the interior but could live with it, the Audi is a little nicer inside and they tend to be better equipped....but I dunno that I'd be willing to go to that kind of cash.

At least both tend to lose money slowly, which sort of offsets the initial outlay ( obviously nothing is going to depreciate as slowly as the BMW given its age but that's just going to be a fact of life really) if I can regain a good chunk of it after a year or two

It certainly doesn't look like there are any/many decent looking examples around for 10k and I'm not interested in a boggo a3

If I took a 100k+ car it looks possible, but I'm not interested in trying to sell on a 10k car with that many miles again a year or two later

The S3 isn't the car for you then. Is it mainly the engine you are interested in or the interior?

As said you will certainly struggle to get a good one for 10k.

For me the S3 is just a nice all round package. Good balance of looks outside, looks and finish inside, general level of kit and the right engine. Couldn't be less interested in an A3 2.0t, not that i think there's anything particularly wrong with it tbh just doesn't float my boat, I'd rather have the VW or Skoda

I need to drive an edition 30, wasn't massively struck on the interior but could live with it if it drives right. Might also look at some VRS' with full leather as you're getting a relatively new car for the money but I still don't know if I could live with it inside and I'd want a bit more power.....but probably wouldn't buy a remapped car - can't win!

If I'm going to spend more than double what my own car is currently worth it needs to at least feel like a genuine sideways step, or ideally like I'm actually getting something appreciably better in some way, not just newer and with an easier boot. So far I've come up with nothing that does it for me, not really an issue as i'll just keep the e46 and cash in the bank!

It's pretty much the same as the S3. The S3 is the same car with a bit more power and a slightly different bodykit (Though it doesnt look much different to an S-Line A3).

I can totally see why you'd pick an S3 over an A3 but if you 'couldnt be any less interested' in a 2.0T A3 then best you dont waste any money on an S3 because it's... a 2.0T A3.

S3 v A3 2.0T isnt like comparing an RS4 with an A4 1.9 TDI 130...

The A3 2.0T has a few differences mainly a smaller turbo although these can generally be mapped to S3 power without the added weight of the haldex system. It is better for general driving as the turbo comes in quite a bit sooner and they aren't slow by any means.

The S3 will hold it's value better but they aren't that different. The S3 is as you say a good all round car apart from a value perspective!
