AUNE T1 (MK1 + MK2) discussion

I'm going to have to delay my first foray into tube rolling - I went to Specsavers for my annual eye check today, fully expecting a "no change" but I was wrong and have been stung with a bill for new varifocals and reading glasses.

No problem just going to order a pair then.

Is this the correct Siemens ECC88?

Sorry to mess you about with the rockets the bill for new glasses knocked the stuffing out of my bank balance and I had a "whoa!" moment. :D
There are not many left and the price is right so go ahead and grab a couple for yourself because a spare is always useful and they do wear out.
I may be able to get myself a couple too if I can get hold of my mate, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The link shows a Siemens ECC88 and as far as I know that's a good one, a better version of the standard EH 6922 that the T1 ships with.

yeah that's the siemens I bought, are you copying my tube buys? lol

tbh i think i'm done with tube rolling unless you guys wanted to go for those other more expensive Ukrainian ones and split the costs, getting too expensive now.

so i have that siemens (better version of the stock one very neutral) and 3 rockets of which one is an 80 from mike and two are 78 from ukraine.

i also have the stock one too so I have 5 tubes altogether now, no need for me to buy more tbh, the rockets for me are simply sublime well worth having a spare so IMO it's better you guys are buying separately especially with their not being many left.

the siemens suits the fidelio X1 better it seems to tighten it up, but the rocket feels a lot more lively and fun so i could easily switch between the two depending on my mood.

Just grabbing a few different ones.

Only have a gold lion and the rocket pair so far. Wanted something suited to my X1's and also heard the orange globes are decent but not sure which one to go for.

All individually tested here http://www.upscaleaudio.com/6922/

I might be making an order from him (depends if I can source them closer to home). Looking at getting a Rocket* and Amperex 7308 and/or bugle boy*.

* These are driver grade, but with the Aune that doesn't matter.

Driver grade - Lowest noise but not the lowest in microphony. Triode balance will be similar to Gold grade.
This grade is only suitable for use in the driver stage of an amplifier, or the output/buffer stage of a DAC or CD Player.

Direct quote from the website.

I've seen on head-fi that it doesn't matter what grade you use on the T1.

Thanks. Seem to be a lack of silver mk2's around for sale.

Also had an idea for storage for tubes. Ordered a vintage wooden cigar box and some thick flight case foam packing which should safely store 8-10 tubes.

Black or silver worked for me. My entire desktop setup is either black or silver.

Could always contact Aune directly? It'd be shipped from China though....

I'll try and find a local(ish) source for tubes (probably ebay). Getting them from US is a last resort unless I want something fancy. The aune is an experiment for me. I might grab a 6 tube amp for sitting room listening. Some are quite pretty...

I bought a pair last night, they were down to 2 pairs left at that point but they seem to have "magicked" up some more stock in the mean time - funny that :D

damn ukrainians lol

i've still not tested my rockets from there, hopefully tomorrow. i'm done with tubes have to stop myself before it gets out of hand.

as for the headphone amp on the AUNE T1 I have heard that is the weakest part of the the 2 (DAC/AMP) from all your research would it be worth using this as a USB DAC only and then feeding into say an O2 amp which is £70-£80?

no way i would buy one atm but possibly thinking of that as an upgrade path in the future or a little dot or something (but that means more tube madness).

I don't think the amp's ability to drive headphones is a weakness, it doesn't have any problem driving these K702's (same as Q701). Why I think they say it's the weakest link is that it's basically a CMOY amp and there are more elegant solutions out there such as the O2 (better design) and the Magni (discrete components) / Vali (tube amp). As to whether the competition actually sounds any better is a lot more subjective because there are many who still prefer the sound of a good CMOY over the competition.

I have been toying with the idea of eventually getting a Little Dot MkII and feeding it from the T1's RCA outputs but I'm not yet convinced I will see any appreciable improvement in the sound quality.

yeah your most likely right tbh.

like i say everything i have read points to this being one of the best if not the best DAC/AMP for under $200.

headfonia say it's better than the M and M stack. probably no point in me ever upgrading from this tbh, it's absolutely amazing for the money and after this the law of diminishing returns kicks in quite badly.

i may however use the RCA out as a source to active speakers rather than as a source for a dedicated headphone amp.
