Australian Grand Prix 2016, Melbourne - Race 1/21

One thing that I don't like is teh way he asked for Sainz to move over, I don't agree with that at all - unless of course a championship is at stake and its the final game of the season, but the first game of the season don't ask for your team mate to move over. I don't care if he'd have given Palmer a better challenge than Sainz and got past quicker - you've got to earn that first and it's called overtaking your team mate, if you are quicker than him then you can overtake him! If you haven't got the skills to overtake whilst claiming to be quicker than you haven't got the skills!

That's the thing MV had the easy job as all he was doing was concentrating on attacking Sainz whereas Sainz was having to worry about trying to get past the guy in front as well as fending off an ever aggressive team mate. So by that token I think Sainz did a pretty good job! :)

Exactly, and even moreso affirms the point that I made above.

Currently all the red flag does is neutralise the race which is fine if there are plenty of laps remaining and at worst ruins the race if it happens toward the end.

Actually it still ruins it even when there are plenty of laps to go - its never "neutral"

If a driver has taken the hit in the laps before the red flag by taking a longer wearing set of tyres knowing he will only have to stop once - everyone else gets a "free" change around him during the red flag, that completely ruins his whole race no matter when it happens

Isnt a Haas a mini - Ferrari anyway, not sure it can really be considered a "new team" as such considering how many "Italian" engineers worked on the design for months.

Actually I totally disagree with this. The team has to give itself the best chance of getting more points, however its done. Sainz had plenty of laps to try and get past and was failing pretty dismally , why not let the other member of the team try and get past.

Obviously that changes with a lap to go to the chequered flag, ie if the 2nd driver still hasn't got past then they should re-swap so that the finishing position reflects fairly on where they got to.

(He also appeared to disobey team orders, as the radio transmission - which is usually a few laps old by the time the viewers hear it - was clearly played during the race to let Palmer go past as Sainz wasn't able to over take at that point - and he totally ignored it for another 1 - 2 laps until he managed to get past)

Good on Sainz for not listening, I wouldn't have yielded either. Worst thing Massa ever did was letting Alonso go past in Germany...

Vettel was told to let MW on occassions and told the team to **** ***. That's what I like, Mavericks, not puppets.

I think teams shouldn't be able to work on cars under a red flag. EXCEPT. When safety takes priority. E.G. It rains heavily while the race is stopped, Race director declares a wet race and all cars must change tyres. This would work other way aswell, from wet to a dry race.

If the race is stopped just for people to clear the track, a la Melbourne, then they wouldn't be able to change tyres, unless they were already in or heading into the pits when the red flag was put out.

Then the chances are you would be complaining that they should be able to work on cars, as those who haven't putted yet, would have to go back out and then come back in, but as field is bunched up. Then they go to tithe back if the field.

Either way some are screwed, and some gain. So you might as well let the work as that gives the better results.

The moaning on the radio and swearing was great for the viewer, promotes discussion and drama, but it shows a massive lack of respect to the team imo. He should tone it down a bit.

The whole purpose of MV's 2016 season is to move him to a better car. I'd expect it to continue throughout the whole season - team holding him back, car holding him back. Was it Brundle who said that Jos was pretty much focussed already on getting him a move away?

It was Herbert post Qualifying.

Max gets a drive in a top team by performing well on track. He doesn't get there by swearing down the radio like a spoilt brat and throwing a tantrum. The likes of Toto or Horner or Arrivabenne will not have seen/heard that and gone "that's a guy I want to put in my car".

yes i know Ferrari B team yada yada, but to me they are already more prominent than Manor (8 years....), im all up for it.

Its embarrassing for the Haas to be better than McLaren already :(

So Haas get access to a tried and tested engine which has been around for way longer than the Honda with a much longer development time, a chassis basically conceived and mentored by Ferrari + throw one completely skewed red flagged race on a circuit not even intended for race cars and you've drawn that conclusion already. OK.

You're really annoyed at this for some reason? Why?

UFS1, Campos (HRT), Virgin (Marussis/Manor) and Lotus Racing (Team Lotus/Caterham): Collective results over 7 seasons/270 races, 2 points.

Haas F1: Collective results from 1 race, 8 points.

Total justification that the FIAs team selection process is useless, and the way a team should be brought into F1 is to follow the Haas approach. Anyone who says the Haas approach is wrong is missunderstanding what F1 needs, or is simply butt hurt that they beat their favorite team on their debut.

Dumping teams into F1 with no data, budget or experience and then laughing that they are 6 seconds off the pace isn't really fair. Haas way is definitely better. Sure, the red flag did help them, but as said earlier, the car itself is competitive to keep a Williams and a FI behind even with DRS.

He also goes on to say.

"I was looking at an old picture of a start at Estoril and the two Williams were ahead then the two McLarens and they were wide cars, wheels looked great, the rear wheels should always be way bigger than the front wheels,"

"We need more mechanical grip and less wake coming off the car in front. At the moment you see us just sliding around as we don't have much grip as it is on these tyres and then as soon as we get in the wake there is just nothing we can do.

Didn't a team actually do this in the race - say to one of their drivers, "If you can't get past we will swap"?
