***Australian Open***

Pretty straightforward victory for Nadal. Might not have been able to break Federer mentally but he started to break him down physically half way through the first set and it was one way traffic from then onwards.

Wawrinka should offer a far harder physical challenge in the final but there are question marks over the mental side of his game. He's improved no end over the last 18 months but I'm not sure he'll believe he can beat Nadal the same way most of the current generation still don't believe they can beat Federer even though they have the game to do so.

Shame Murray didn't have a bit more preparation before this tournament because I would've fancied him to beat Federer in straight sets and take Nadal to 5.
 
i notice there are no comments on the women's final yesterday. quite right too. it was ****ing awful. i do like women's tennis but why can't you ever get a match with both players on top form. :/

now let's see if wawrinka can put up any kind of resistance this morning. i think i might already know the answer to that.... :o

I had it on in the background yesterday but it was terrible, it's particularly telling when in the first set both players made more unforced errors than winners.

Really quite enjoying the match so far, I hope that Wawrinka doesn't tense up but he's got himself into a decent position in the first set.

you'd expect a first time finalist to be tense at the start but he clearly isn't. good on him.

now let's see if he can serve this set out. it could be the first set he takes off nadal in 12 matches. :eek:

edit: he goes 0-40 down but still wins the game and set. amazing. :D

Not many players outlast Nadal in the longer rallies and still have the power and energy to hit clean winners. This is a thumping so far and Nadal's hanging on. Would love to see some more players win Grand Slams.
 
I previously stated that the "real" final was 2 days ago, Nad vs Fed.
How wrong was I...

Wawrinka is putting up one heck of a display here and looks like he could beat Nadal.

Nadal looks a little shell-shocked right now.

I hope this isn't gamesmanship from Nadal, it's probably unworthy but there's always a slight suspicion with him that it's more tactical than otherwise.

Wawrinka needs to keep his cool though as this can't be helping his composure. I think Nadal needs to be penalised for timewasting though as this is way beyond the allowed medical time-out.

//edit or maybe I'm wrong and he's even better when he's hacked off...
