Austrian Grand Prix 2016, Spielberg - Race 9/21

Not seeing any mention of brakes in that.

Mercedes not smelling of roses.

Also here's the menu to select a penalty from under Article 38.3 :

Am I reading the rule right? Had this been earlier in the race and Nico Rosberg was found guilty he'd only have got a 5 second penalty to be served during a pitstop? Based on the 10 second penalty he got given.

Basically if it was a 5 second stop and go, plus the pit travel time, he effectively got a lesser time penalty in the margin of about 10-15 seconds then?

In other matters evidence of Brundle's continuing slide as a co-commentator is pretty clear when he said it looked like a failure at the rear of Perez's car, even going so far as to suggest another suspension failure. Ignoring the lack of any corrective movement on Perez's part to suggest so, I thought it was 100% obvious it was a left-front brake failure from the fact that that wheel continued rotating until it was knocked off while the right-front was totally locked.

There were a few brake issues yesterday. Debris or just teams misjudging the extra speed from the cooler air allowing them to brake harder and blanking off the brakes too much?

As everyone has said, utterly farcical decision.

Obviously the ten second penalty for the crash actually means nothing in real terms but what's even more surprising for me is the reprimand for carrying on with such a damaged car. They're basically saying he should have pulled over. Had he done so, he'd have finished eighth instead of fourth, so by carrying on he's gained an additional 8 championship points. What kind of message or penalty is that? He should be relegated to eighth position as he would have been had he done what he was supposed to do.

My biggest concern right now is Wolff and Mercedes reaction to this. I usually have a lot of time for Toto Wolff but his behaviour in this incident is disgraceful. Still refusing to pin the blame on Rosberg and just doing the "takes two to tango" routine and now talking about possible team orders as a result.

Why should we be deprived of such battles because Rosberg screwed up? It's Rosberg who needs to be given a final warning and his contract renewal put on hold as an added incentive to behave himself.

Also, let us not forget that it was the team that created this situation by screwing over Lewis in the race. I understand that he was on a single-stop strategy and it just panned out that they needed to switch him to a two-stopper but the fact remains that this basically handed the race to Rosberg through no fault of Lewis' (not for the first time). Add in the additional lost time in pit stops and the team could and should have given Lewis a good few laps before bringing Rosberg in to make the undercut work.

I hope we don't get team orders. With how obviously favored Rosberg is on strategy and pit stop performance, it'll be a free WDC for him. Wonder if Lewis would ignore them.

If we do we know who they will favour - the team are basically favouring one without telling the other anyway without any kind of obvious order. Hamilton would probably just ignore them, but this is going to all turn very sour very quickly.

Show me any driver that would have pulled over and I'll show you a liar.

Hamilton will definitely ignore them and then its up to them to decide what they would want to do with one of the best drivers on the grid...

I guess we'll see what there plans are when Rosberg's contract gets sorted?! I'd argue Hamilton does far more good for the Mercedes brand than Rosberg does.

Rosberg has been responsible for all the crashes they have had, plus the appalling pull up at Monaco, he is not worth reaining. He is such a child. Get Wehrlein in.
Andi.

Wehrlein isn't ready yet, not if Mercedes want two top-level drivers capable of winning titles from the off. OK he had a good result yesterday and his qualifying performance was awesome, but he was a lap down and was only allowed to regain that lap under the safety car.

Other than that I think he's been a little underwhelming so far, with Haryanto keeping him honest in terms of pace. I suppose it's good to show the consistency he has at this early stage but I was expecting him to be blowing Haryanto out of the water in each qualifying session.

I can see him being loaned to Force India (to help with costs) or even Williams (if they don't take Button and can't find a suitable replacement for Massa) next year to move him up a grid a bit and raise his game.
