We're the Merc mistakes due to both drivers finally thinking they had a shot at pole and pushing to the absolute (and over!) limit?

Maybe they both just got greedy/excited after realising they had a genuine shot at the top.

I must say though, Lewis's looked really odd/similar to when Max and Sainz lost it due to wind in Barcelona. Car went from planted to just sort of lifting up and squirming around like it suddenly lost loads of downforce.

Apparently it was related to the wind, although it’s strange that it only affected the Mercedes’ drivers. They were the only ones out at the time (I think).

The commentators had mentioned the wind a couple times before Hamilton’s off so it must have been significant.

Probably for the other thread but I see Alonso, Schumacher and Steiner are calling for “clarification” over the lack of penalties for Verstappen after his so-called defending last race.

So let's ignore all the important things and turn our attention to the driver equivalent of "beige", Daniel Ricciardo.
What do we think is going on? I've never thought he was that good, but I'm pretty sure he's not a back of the grid pay driver. Are modern cars just too much for him? He's absolutely wasting that McLaren seat just now, and will cost them millions in points money, and salary this year.

That's a really weird comparison.

I really don't know. He seems to have totally lost his way, and be massively down on confidence. His earlier F1 career really is impressive: battering Vettel in his own team straight after four straight season wins, beating Max in '16 and '17. Those podiums in '20. Then he came to McLaren and the wheels fell off. I never expected Norris to be able to equal him yet alone humiliate him.
