Well I think he's a genius. I love most of his songs and his lyrics are mostly excellent.
He wrote the music for a generation and so what if he's taken drugs.

I saw them in early 2005, and to my suprise, he actually showed up!
But he was off his face sadly. Mumbled through the set, but he did play Albion (the old, bootleg lullaby version) which was a rather nice suprise.
But by good he's a scrote. (can I say that around here?) Lyrics are average, music is muddled and lacking in hooks. What is the point of having that kind of ecclectic music if there's no hooks? (See: Pavement for a band who do ecclectic bette than anyone, and have hooks throughout)
Completely overrated.
I really like the libertines and I like babyshambles too; some of the songs are amazing. Most people just see the Pete thats in the tabloids and say 'oh what a nob', if you actually took time to listen to the music you would find out why the man was very successful poet in his jounger years and why so many people rated the libertines so highly.
I couldn't care less if the guy in "on drugs" to be honest, that's not the reason I or anyone else should have for disliking his attempts at producing music.
Skag is way below the other substances musicians tend to abuse, but if you look back at some of the greats in music over the last 30 or so years then there's a running trend: Elvis, Sabbath, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, Clapton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, many others I'm sure I've not mentioned. In many cases I think the consumption of hard drugs puts a slant on music that cannot be gained by eating apples and drinking water. Look at the Chilis, since they've grown up and kicked the skag habit, their music sucks. Granted, they'll retain their teeth and live longer, but I'd rather they threw in the towel now than release another woeful effort like By The Way.

The libs had an exciting new sound, while babyshambles ENTIRE album is made up of the songs that werent good enough to make it into the libertines' second album. That isn't speculation, that's fact - google 'Babyshambles Sessions', they were the name of the early studio dabblings leading up to the libs' second.

I enjoyed the babyshambles album. Are you telling me 'Albion' wasn't good enough to make it on the Libertines album? I think it's up there with 'Music when the Lights go out. I saw them live in Cardiff a few months back and they were good...once the sound engineer got his arse into gear.
A lot of the songs on 'Down in Albion'(A Rebours, stix and stones, killamangiro and albion to name a few) have been around for a long time in various libertines sessions. I saw babyshambles last year in aberdeen and they were all with it. It was a good two hour set with two encores.
I like babyshambles but they will never be as good as the libertines were.

I like babyshambles and the libertines (seen them live- was a great night). As for pete's personal problems??? It doesn't bother me, as almost every artist/band i listen to, abuse or have abused drugs (think beatles, hendrix, Stones, nirvana, led zep, dylan etc etc).
None of them are exactly respectable, but I'd rather be a coke fiend or a stoner than a skaghead. Heroin is by far the most destructive of the drugs normally associated with rock stars, it's more rampantly addictive too and will certainly do your body and state of mind more harm than the other stuff on offer.Gilly said:
