Is it possible to mirror backup a RAID 0 setup onto a single disk and then restore it if anything went wrong with no problems using acornis?? Cos ppl say once the backed up partition is restored, XP will not boot.

There may be cases/controllers where this is an issue, however I can say that as for my current rig with RAID0, I've backed up and restored with no problems several times now, using Acronis. So it certainly doesn't fail in all cases.

I've done it with Acronis no problems. Think it may be hit or miss depending on your board/raid controller. Mine is a Gigabyte DS3

1. Do I risk going for raid0 and spending money on 2 hdds.
2. is all the setup done from the bios?
3. After youve set it up from the bios, you treat the 2 drives as a single drive, ie formatting installing windows and so on?
4. Instead of reinstalling xp, can I just restore my backed up image of my old single drive?
5. My motherboard has a habbit of resetting the bois if the power fails or if i unplug the power source(but strangly it keeps the time correct). So if the bois resets its self, and if i change the settings back, will all my data still be ok?

Just had a idea,, if I get a single 500gb drive, could I use the 500gb drive and my old 200gb drive in raid 0 to test it?. Then if everything works ok, buy another 500gb drive

yup, will work, downside, it will only raid the the 500gb to 200gb, but it just a test :)

What does that mean, Do I need to put the 500gb in the first raid socket on the board? Im guessin it will only see 400gb?

Also does windows know that the drives are in raid in the device manager, or does it still show 1 drive.

As you can tell Ive never done raid before :D

It will show as 1 drive in device manager, whatever you decide to call it in the RAID bios (I called my RAID 1, RAID 1). Yup, 400gb in total - as the RAID has to have both hard drives of equal size, if not it will limit the larger one to the size of the smaller one.

Which Acronis product - I'm looking to migrate from a single disk to a Raid0 array. Thanks

Should work its done by hardware, the drive appears as a single drive.
I see no issue backing up a Raid0 set up to a single HDD then later putting it back on, the Raid0 controler will do all the splitting files to size.

I’ve used Acronis TrueImage Home V8 for quite a while and am thinking of a RAID 0 set up for a new build.

My manual makes no mention of RAID. I have V10 Home, which I don’t think mentions it either.

I may have to try Speedy2004’s idea.

I anticipate getting a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R. Is this the MB you are referring to.

If you can confirm which version of TI, including the build, you are using it would be appreciated.

I wouldn’t use a RAID set up if I couldn’t back it up.

Edit: From Acronis on the Support Forum:

"Acronis True Image 10.0 Home supports Windows Vista and RAID configurations (including RAID 0) even while booted from Bootable Rescue media.

When Acronis True Image is running under Windows, it works with all the hard disk drivers detected by the operating system. If Acronis True Image is running in rescue mode (e.g. to restore the system partition), then it provides support for all hardware RAID controllers.

We would recommend that you make sure you use the latest build (4942) of Acronis True Image 10.0 Home. You can find build number in the Help -> About dialog. To get access to updates you should first register your software.

Please create a new Acronis True Image Bootable Rescue Media using the latest build (check chapter 10 "Creating Bootable Media" in the Acronis True Image User Guide), boot your computer from it and test its functionality."

People are having problems with RAID and TI so no guarantee it will work every time for everyone but in theory it should.

do I need drivers for xp?

Cos I connected the 2 drives up, enabled the raid, and gone into the raid setup in the bios, and its automatically created raid 0 from the 2 drives using 64bit transfer thing. But when I boot xp from my backup drive, it wants some drivers and theres no new drives in admin tools to create.

Sometimes yes. Check in your device manager for unrecognized devices. If so, try to install the drivers for the controller from the motherboard CD, or download them from the web.
