**Baddass' Ultimate TFT FAQ and Reviews! (20" and Above Models)**

sticky updated on 20-4-04 with new info (particularly the Samsung 172X) tidied it up a bit, got rid of dead links and cleaned it up a bit.

Only got round to testing my new Samsung 172X today.

Unfortunately, two dead pixels and they were real noticeable. Thus, I returned it to the shop to get a replacement. Asked for them to set up that for me to check - it also had a dead pixel, but only the one.

Thus, decided to settle for a refund instead; now back to my CRT.

(I'm the sort of person who once they know there is a fault will always keep noticing it, even if I'm trying not too).

Also of the opinion that shouldn't have to put up with dead pixels. This is a £400 monitor, compared to a 19" CRT cost of about £100-£160. Thus, it should be perfect, shouldn't it?

Why is it considered acceptable to sell TFTs with dead pixels (even just one or two) when they have just 1.2 million pixels (1280x1024 approx)? Consider digital cameras at 3 million pixels or CPUs at 20-40 million transisters - these don't have any faults!

Now, wondering whether to stick with the old CRT or 'risk' a different brand of TFT?
(probably mail order, so I guess I could return under the 7 day policy).

Also, the manager stated that ALL TFTs have faulty pixels. Even if none when new then they will most probably develop them over time. Is this right? I thought you only had to worry about whether any exsisted from new, and there isn't the possibly of 'new' ones appearing? Was the manager talking rubbish to encourage me to accept the screen, or is this some truth in this?

(I guess if I did risk another TFT, given the uncertainly over what panel the Hyundai Q17 is currently using, I guess the best bets would be a LG 1710B or Iiyama ProLite 431?)

hes talking half rubbish there........he's very much trying to say "it's ok to buy our dead pixel screens" :D

basically only some TFTs come with dead pixels already, which is a fault during manufacturing......because it costs a lot to make them, and they want to keep retail costs as low as they are, they still sell these screens as it is too expensive to make pixle perfect screens available all the time

it IS possible to devlop them over time, particularly if u are nto careful with the screen and have ppl prodding it all the time......but they can just develop over time, although it is not that common......sometimes pixles will become lazy, but you can often massage them back to working again......its just a feature of the way the pixels refresh themselves over time.......u'd be quite unlucky to devlop them over time tho if u were careful with the screen :)

Q17

Ok, read the reviews , listened to the arguments, made a decision based on the above facts and decided i needed a nice new 17" tft screen.
Only thing was the paralysing fear of dead pixels! No way round it, its a gamble wherever you buy from, just knew i would get a screen with bullet holes in it!
Anyhow, decided on the Q17 from Overclockers, as i live fairly close and thought i could maybe talk face to face with someone in case of any problems.
Last week i went to the shop, saturday morning, got there just after it opened and had to queue up to get to the counter and this guy in front of me had a L70S hyundai under his arm returning it with a dead pixel!
s***! I watched with morbid fascination as he explained to the man behind the counter that his screen had the "North Star" shining out of the middle of his screen, a brilliant white point of light that quite upset him for some reason! :D
Well, the nice man at overclockers smiled and said did he want another L70S or maybe an LG? He chose the LG and I wished him good luck as he left the shop.
It was my turn at the counter and I asked for a Q17 and other people in the shop looked at me and laughed!
But I knew my chances had just improved on getting a good dead pixel free screen! (law of averages!)
I also felt better knowing that they might change it no questions asked if i wasnt happy.
Well, if you are that man who changed his monitor, I hope you had better luck with your re-placement, and as for mine? Well, it just so happened that when I turned it on, THERE WHERE NO DEAD PIXELS!! WHOO HOO! Not that I was that bothered;)

For those interested in the hyundai Q17, im 100% satisfied, colour, brightness, looks, build, and yes , game play is faultless.
I thank you:D

Hyundai Q17

Hiya guys,

Last night I borrowed from a friend the Hyundai Q17 monitor and I noticed the following.

In any text, eg. a word document, mark a paragraph and set the font to "magenta" ( I'm sure other colours will do the trick, it just so happened that I used this one) which is the 2 colour from the bottom, second column from the right.

Try moving the window arround and notice if the colour of the text becomes more vivid (redish..)

I'm not sure whether this is a "feature" or the monitor is faulty...

Thanks in advance!

more likely that the monitor is fine. Its just a feature of all TFT's really. Colour is not always even across the whole screen, generally not noticable at all.

Also Kev_UK, all TFT's will "ghost" a bit when you move a text window around fast, but you really need to ask whether you could read the text at that speed anyway ;)

Has anyone any further information/regarding 3D performance on the Samsung 193p?

Ive got 1 on order (for the past month/stock still out) but looking to replace my current 3 to this product just wish I could get more personal opnions about it, err anyone?

Well got my Samsung 172X today :), was petrified as i was powering it up, was expecting dead pixels, but none :). First time i've ever purchased a tft so unfortunately can only comment on my experiences so far with this one monitor.

DVD test : ran Alien, nice dark movie, quality was excellent, picture was clean, movement was as good as on my 19" CRT, colour was great. So for DVD's couldn't fault it.

Games test : only have Counter-Strike installed at the moment as i have just installed 2 SATA drives, i play quite a lot of CS so i was dreading using a tft for gaming, but suffice to say gaming was very acceptable, there is a touch of screen lag but after a few hours playing you get used to it and can play as normal. I will say this, the colour defintion was truly excellent, all usual dark corners were lit up and visible, had trouble seeing them using my CRT.

Gripes : Doesnt come with a DVD cable , so had to purchase that separately, and theres a lack of a manual, though there is a manual on the CD.

Was sad to read that Adam.mt had problems with his one, in my opinion if you are purchasing something then you dont want it to be defective, could you imagine buying a car from a show room with a flat tyre and them refusing to replace it.

Also no dead pixels (and these screens have a 7 day period where you can get it replaced for even 1 dead pixel).

Lo mate, I am looking seriously at this baby now. Where is this 1 dead pixel replacement quote? I cannot find anything on the Samsung site. Is that direct from them or from your supplier?

Cheers,

Mike
