that would have warranted a major flaming! ;) thanks for being one of those ppl who look at the sticky and glad u found it useful.

well it's very normal to get variations in colour and brightness when looking at the TFT from anything other than perpendicular to the screen.........

there is bound to be some leaking of light around the edges of the screen too. dont worry about that, common on TFT's, unless it's REALLY bad?

just check u are set on 1280 x 1024 resolution and also 60hz as the refresh rate

does your GFX card have a setting to increase Digital Vibrance (on VGA too) mine does (GeForce card) so i just upped that, made colours more vibrant then

alternatively get Powerstrip, a good prog for changing all your colour settings etc

yeah it has it in the NVidia drivers, in the overlay settings, just for desktop, bump up the digital vibrance

i also upped the birghtness to 150% for overlay as videos play brighter then which helped on my TFT

Yeah I know, I'm not in the position to buy yet unfortunately.

Are they discontinued now or something?

was never "officially" launched over here at all, they thought it was too specialised or something lame. some places inc overclockers imported them due to demand

theya re all the 12ms screens!! dont worry about that at all

Hey baddass, i'm thinking of ordering the L1720B next week (£310) and i have just seen a Sony SDMHS94PB it's sexy as the LG and its 19", it's "supposed" to have 12 m/s and it can be had for £455 and have been told it's worth a lot more!

What would you recommend i do? i feel so confused

if it were me, i couldnt justify the extra cash for a 19inch whcih isnt 1600 resolution. I would personally go for a top of the range 17inch TFT with the TOP looks of the LG1720B and also saev some money too! even if the Sony is 12ms it's not going to outperform the LG anyway really, you would never really be abel to tell the difference for normal use between a 12ms panel and the 16ms AU panel in the LG model. It's a lovely TFT and a decent price, i would go for the LG as you know you'll be getting a class product and you know you will save some money too :)

and Sh4rk, the Q17+ would loook good imo next to a black shuttle. The base of it is black in parts, and silver and black is always a nice combo :) if you're looking for a black TFT try and get hold of one of the Iiyama's perhaps or the black Hitachi, as both of those are nice too.

Yo, ive just recieved an LG1710B, very chuffed with it, games are excellent and my eyes are in a good state of health now lol :)

Anyway, ive noticed that the bottom half of the screen is *slightly* brighter than the top half, is that normal for a TFT?

yep common that brightness can vary across the screen, viewing angle makes a difference here, try tilting it, as best to look head on at the monitor so your sight is perpendicular to the screen.......also brightness can vary a little towards the edges of the TFT where the backlight can leak thru a little, this is common aswell

Hey baddass, look what just arrived :D

awwwwwwww.......damn you!! :D hehe, looks good, let us know how u like it. send it to me and ill "look after it for you" while u wait for the rest of your rig ;) lol

nice...........a 1710B and a 1720B :) i like!!

ill be round in 5 minutes to drool ;) not far from Bristol!! lol

set them both up. Id be interested to hear if u can see much diff between DVI on the 10B and normal (well it doesnt have DVI) on the 20B

they should perform the same as it's the same panel, but i woudl be interested in this. also VGA on 10B vs VGA on 20B

well the L70S has the 12ms Sammy panel so is even newer than the 16ms AU panel in the LG. They arent gunna be very different at all in terms of performance. The L70S is a bargain really for the price. LG has DVI aswell tho, whereas Hyundai doesnt (but the Q17 - same panel - does)

thanks Bluemoonmcfc, a useful addition to the sticky. I would be skeptical about Hitachi's return policy tho! and like Mr Latte has said, it can depend on other circumstances too, but a useful guideline nonetheless

Hi found this a cheap 17" TFT with a 16ms reponse time anyone know anything about videoseven its got the AU panel as well seen it for £220

Here's a link

well if it has the 16ms AU panel then you already know performance wise it's gunna be top notch. IF the looks suit your needs and the price (which it should :)) then go for it, if not look for a different style TFT but you'll prob have the same panel in it in the end really anyway

and bismith2000, check this thread for more info on the LG1730B, but basically just same panel as 10 and 20 versions, but with new styling and a few fancy bits thrown in like swivel etc. Improved contrast and viewing angles too on the panel.

havent seen anything about that LG before really, maybe not released yet anyway

Faz, ill add some info about the Viewsonic, but might host the info elsewhere and link to it on the fonr page as the sticky is really concentrating on 17inch models atm, and there is very litle more room on the front page really at the mo. will sort out a part for it tho, then perhaps have a linkt o a 19inch tft section

well the problem with the 12ms Sammy vs 16ms AU debate is the fact that they are made by 2 different manufacturers

one company's 12ms might not be another company's 12ms panel if u see what i mean. numbers arent always important in these cases. from ppls opinions and tests tho the 2 panels seem very similar in terms of performance. The 16ms AU is a long time established panel which is why it is still popular, you know you are getting a decent screen. the 12ms Sammy panel is fairly new, and while good on paper, some ppl are still a little wary of it.......especially with all the confusion with the 172X and the review panels sent out which got crappy write-ups. dont worry tho, the 12ms Sammy panel is great :)

Baddass, any information on the monitor i posted?

No worries if not :) Thanks.

havent really heard anything on it at all really mate. and no sign of any reviews anywhere i can see. From the spec and LG site i would say:

- 12ms response, so VERY likely to be using the same Samsung 12ms panel as the 172X, Q17+, L70S+ etc.........so decent panel

-addition of the TV function is pretty cool, and can hook it up to DVD players too, kinda like a combo TFT for a pc and an LCD TV screen by the looks of it (might mean it is expensive tho! :() TV tuner and the speakers are classed as "optional" aswell, so may be a fair bit more?..........

- decent contrast ratio which u would expect on modern TFT's

- has both DVI and VGA so thats something less to worry about

looks good, but prob gunna be very hard to find, if its even available at all yet......

hope thats of some help :)

I have another question then - I like to play all my games at 1024x768, and run windows at 1280x1024. I read in this FAQ that the samsung 172 is the "only monitor to resize its display correctly". Is this true? So if I went for the LG for example, with the 16ms AU display, it wouldnt resize perfectly. And even the Hyundai Q17+ which used the same screen, still wouldnt resize correctly?

Cheers.

in games, most panels are fine for scaling games down to lower resolutions. a lot of ppl run the games at lower res's outside the native res of the tft. it is in normal windows use where the TFT can look a little bad if run outside the native res. the 12ms Sammy panel used in the 172X, Q17+, L70S+ is said to be one of the better ones for scaling, but gaming-wise you shoudl be fine with the 16ms AU panel too

that bit at the beginning was written by Demon a long time ago, before the 172X was around.........ill edit it now, but basically the 172X is very good for gaming, check the section about it on the front page and u'll see what ppl's opinions are of it........

thanks for alerting me to that bit, will change it now :)

well nearly all of the top TFT's today are going to be fine for gaming, ghosting is pretty much eliminated now, so it just isnt really an issue. i doubt u can tell any real difference between the 12ms Sammy panel and the 16ms AU panel in performance, and tha Hitachi (using the AU panel) has been around for a very long time :) even if they do release faster panels, are you really going to see any performance improvement?! i doubt it

regarding the BEST 19 inch monitor around, Mr LAtte has had a lot of TFT's and he'll tell you the Samsung 193P is his fav, looks a very sweet monitor, check out hsi thread on it here

19inch and 20inch TFT technology is a little behind the 17inch models really, but you do have the added bonus of higher resolutions. i would check out this thread for lots of info on the larger models.

is the 172x still the top of the pile, or has another one knocked it off its top place?

was it ever top of the pile?!

in some ppl's opinions it is still one of the best, and i would def have to agree. there are a lot of competitors for that crown tho, and there is certainly no "best" TFT to go for, its all a matter of opinion really
