I've just noticed in a hires photo that Grosjean's survival cell appears to have split where the halo attaches. Just shows how much force was involved on both the halo and of course the chassis.

Lucky to survive. Lucky not to have severe burns. Lucky not to lose his legs.

Can't say I've seen anything similar since the since the front of Heikki Kovailen's McLaren split in two in the tyres at Barcelona.

I was referring to the marshal which ran across the track directly in front of Norris to attend to Perez's car. The marshal which ran across to help Grosjean should certainly be commended.

Force was supposedly 53g.....

Didn't watch the race and have only just seen the crash, that was pretty intense.

Without the halo would the outcome of been the same?

I think he would have died without the halo. You can see the shape of the hole his car punched through the barrier. The halo ensured that the barrier continued to be torn open as it slid up the halo and as the front half of the car punched though. Without it, the barrier would have decapitated him as the car speared through with a much smaller hole, and without the halo to force the barrier apart around his head.

I think there’s little doubt the halo saved his life, it opened up the barrier rather than his crash helmet taking the full force. That truly was the ultimate test for the halo system.

It certainly takes a calm head and a good dose of adrenaline to undo your belt and get out of the car having had a huge impact and engulfed in flames. It’s hard to imagine, nor do I really want to!

Yeah, I think without it the outcome would have been different.

So glad to see him climb out, judging by the burns he has on his hands he wouldn't of lasted much longer in that wreck.

And when you look at what’s left of the car. I think they need a few more powerful extinguishers. Whatever that firefighter had was useless.

Voted 7. The race as a whole was fairly boring, a few good passes, and feel bad for Perez.

I'd never wish an accident like that, but it sort of brought back that excitement of the unknown and drama that we used to see.

Honestly can't believe he got out! I assumed the worse, the force of the impact and the fire ball that erupted was scary! The halo definitely saved him today.

Watching highlights and thus replay, how he didn’t suffer and damage to his legs!
That would have been the worst; conscious but unable to get out.

Also he was rather lucky the medical car was so close following the field on the opening lap

Exactly, even with all of the excessive safety regulations he was very lucky to get out of the car alive today and whilst people are praising the halo which I accept probably did save his life or prevent serious injury on this occasion, had his car flipped upside down it would have likely trapped him in a burning cockpit. Nothing about F1 should ever be considered safe there's an argument that making the drivers feel too safe makes it more dangerous because they behave more complacently and recklessly. The type of driving we see today with drivers not giving opponents room and using their cars as weapons would have been unthinkable a few decades ago because it was so dangerous to even crash.

Agreed.

That's just the outer carbon skin.

Next time Bottas wins a race (usually cos Lewis has problems) and comes on the radio telling the haters to **** off, this is why they give you stick mate.
Indeed but he never learns, he's totally deluded, next year he'll be giving it the big I am Bottas 4.0 but that year just like every other he'll lose to Hamilton as he always does.

I'm looking forward to 2022 when Russell will take his seat and relegate Bottas back to Williams where he belongs.

A part of me hopes Grosjean will learn a lesson from this. He won’t.

He’s certainly nearly caused some serious accidents. The way he cut across the track was just bizzare.

It was a very silly move he pulled. He is often very blinkered when he's going wheel to wheel.
Romain has been a liability for quite some time now, he's lost it, doesn't seem to have the awareness of what's going on around him. He's a nice guy married with three kids but it's the time to give his own ego/desires a miss.

Really hope that he puts his family first and hangs up his gloves, but I feel he'll go right to the end.

I think they need to look at the safety barrier design. Armco should be used to deflect not stop.

He's a lucky lucky guy for sure.

If you look at the accident, it looks like the car hits the armco at 90 degrees, straight in like an arrow. Any other angle the car would probably have slid along it as designed. I suspect the pointy nose of the car hit the armco where the horizontal gaps are between the horizontal strips, and it just wedged it's way through. Car accidents with all that speed and inertia can be crazy. It's a huge amount of energy that's got to go somewhere.
