2022 is the biggest aero rule change in a long time though - you'd have to hope that Newey/Red Bull would be able to capitalise on this, unlike the previous rule changes (e.g. where Merc capitalised on engine development)

Lewis just said this isn't a quick fix and will take time and Russell said Alfa and Alpha are faster than them.
I won't believe they're that far off the pace as to genuinely be midfield fodder until we're watching them struggle to get into Q3.
They were well off the pace (at least vs Max) in the first few practice sessions last year and whilst the attitude might have been a bit more positive from them last year vs this year, I just don't feel like you can sensibly write them off until they really have to start putting the competitive laps in.

I do think they will be there or there about in a few races time, but I think they will be very lucky to manage more than winning a couple races here and there. Could end up 3rd in the championship, which after the last 8 years is gonna feel like a big loss.

He’s probably in a strop because they totally stoped development of last years car to concentrate on this years, had they continued the development of last years car he most likely would have had his 8th, he was probably told they would **** this year’s championship and it now probably turns out they won’t.

The way I see it is the oily bit are pretty much the same and that's always been their strength anyway.
They just need more running to understand the aero and we have already seen them change the car up in quite a dramatic fashion from the 1st test to the 2nd.
I think it's just time they need to get it sorted and be somewhere near.
Not saying they will be fighting for the championship but I can't see them sitting at the back of the field for long if it is broken.

Cost cap will be a bit of an issue, but wind tunnel time is irrelevant, as this canmot be replicated in wind tunnels.
The base car looks to be good , it is a couple of little things that need sorting, it is purely that the issues can only be replicated, and thus sorted on track, so will take time.

I think testing a fake car in Barcelona is coming to bit them in their back sides. If they'd have not played these silly games, they'd have had a month to work on their porpoising issues. Same as the other teams have.

99.999999999% of the car was/is identical, it was a cosmetic body panel change between tests, that was all.
That and a new floor, same as Red Bull and most other teams changed.
The issue plaguing merc compared to others, is that they get a larger drop off in performance when they increase ride height, than other teams.

Yes, a fake car. The aero that results entirely from the floor and body are the areas they're now suffering from.

Merc seem slow at the top end, apart from Verstappen it seems mixed up at the top.

2 or 3 races in the midfield with the RB on top and Max will walk the championship.
Assuming they fix those porpoising issues and it releases a load of downforce, they’ll still need to tune the setup so I put them at least 3 days behind everyone else.
