Baldur's Gate 3

Thanks, will do. Been a good start already, I'm sad I didn't play the first two back in the day.
I didn't realise I had to loot the guys as I went in that first big fight, that there wouldn't be a second chance to loot them, nor even to cheese the demon (I got him with 10 turns of ROFL which was fun but I then just ran past to do the thing).
Played BG1 for the first time ever about 2 years ago. Thought it was fantastic, you find it on GOG.

Great surprise patch has borked my new playthrough. There's a decent chance some of the mods I was using wont get updated as the authors might not be playing BG3. Just great

Problem with most modded games, really wish Steam wouldn't force updates unless you're playing online/ multiplayer game.

Or let people opt out of updates till they're ready or make publishers follow in CDReds footsteps and put the old version on steam (under betas) for people who wish to carry on a modded game.

Honestly there are so many simple ways to not ruin paying customers experiences.

factorio has some options also for older versions. currently on a 1.10. version instead of 2.0
but its a smaller game (200mb?) than Baulders Gate 3 (100gb??)
i was forever having to delete games to make additional space just so an update would download in beta.. im sure its better now but having to redownload 100 gb each time wasnt fun

I've only just jumped onto the BG3 wagon, and it's definitely you need to get used to. Even something like Neverwinter Nights 2 is a game based off D&D, whereas BG3 feels much more like a D&D simulator with a game UI over the top of it. It's quite unforgiving in a way!

I need to get back into this, I do really enjoy a good story driven RPG but always struggled with the combat in BG3, as DM425 said the game is very unforgiving and I always found myself in situations where I was heavily outnumbered or simply didn't have enough spells to deal with the enemies.

The first act is particularly egregious in this regard and I think can put some players off. Early doors character level counts for a lot ; there are some encounters you really want to avoid until you've levelled up a bit. From Act 2 onward, as your characters become a bit more fleshed out with abilities etc, the game becomes a bit more forgiving.

So 50 hours in looking around and trying to do every bit of lore, find every book and pick up every bit of vendor tat and I've moved on to the githyanki creche, and I've just found I've still missed a whole section with the owlbears. I'll save it for another play through.
This game is a lot of fun and it runs so well on the Steam deck. It's my first foray into the entire dnd ecosystem and I'm listening to the R.A. Salvatore audiobooks and it's interesting to flesh the world out with the books too.
I'm struggling to figure out how to gear karlach and get good use out of her. Tbh I mostly just run with Laezel, Astarion and Shadowheart the OG crew. Even Gale I haven't figured out really, I've probably not picked the best classes. Making Karlach a throwing barbarian doesn't seem to be as strong as I thought it would be, not as strong as just having Laezel just chop everyone to pieces with the drow sword.

Yeah my main character is a glamour bard, with double hand crossbows. So a heavy hitter on the front line would be good. I tried rebuilding around giving Karlach all the best gear I had, as a bear wildheart. First fight in act 2 still doesn't seem to be going as well as I'd like. I think I got the hang of how to use Laezel better through more time in act 1, I'll probably just stick with my OG team and a bit of Gale for their banter every now and then
