Baldur's Gate 3

Sadly a little disappointed after seeing the gameplay video.
I did enjoy the system for the Divinity Original Sin games, but would have much preferred it to play more like the old Baldur's Gate titles.

I'll still probably get a copy and will likely enjoy the game overall, but would have liked it to have more resemblance to the classics RPG that I loved.

I personally tend to prefer turn based games like xcom to real time but I still don't think it's a good idea to implement it in Baldurs Gate.

The real time combat was practically a staple of the series and it's removal is bound to cause a backlash from the games biggest fans!

Yeah, I can envisage many of the Baldurs Gate fans being unhappy but many of the Divinity Original Sin fans being happy.

r/baldursgate is outraged.

It doesn't look like it will feel like Baldur's Gate which is a shame.

I'll hold off for a sale, or overwhelmingly positive reviews.

As I say, its a definite day one purchase for me but thats pretty much only because I loved Divinity Original Sin 2 and I'm looking at this as a Divinity Original Sin 3 but set in the Baldurs Gate world and using D&D 5e rules. Its a win/win for me, but I do expect a fairly significant number of the Baldurs Gate fans to avoid the game, which is a shame really because a good game is a good game. Unless of course they are both Baldurs Gate fans and people who also did not like Divinity OS 2, in which case it makes sense.

I wouldn't suggest it's not going to be a good game, but real time combat on the D+D rulebook, using dice rolls is literally the core of Baldur's Gate. You could have made this game with any name and it would have been a great game, but by specifically using Baldur's Gate 3, you're not only trying to appease fans of a series, you're insinuating that it's going to be of a similar ilk.

It's like buying the Ferrari brand and releasing a new model but instead of the Italian horsepower, you've stuck some Japanese turbocharged lump in it. Yeah it says Ferrari on it, but you're not going to fool anyone and you definitely can't say "well we weren't expecting that reaction".

I'm not even judging the game, I'll play it and hope to be pleaseany surprised. But these are bold choices, and it's no shock people aren't reacting well.

Oh I'm not shocked that the BG fans arent happy about it, not shocked at all, I knew the moment it was announced as Larian that the BG fans would be in an uproar over it. I can even understand why they are, its just that for me, its pretty inconsequential, if it had been done in the BG style, it would have been an awesome game for me and I'd have loved it, if it had been done in the DOS style, it would have been an awesome game and I'd have loved it. I literally couldnt lose either way :)

Pretty much my perspective. Love DO:S2 so thinking of this as a new wrapper to a formula I like. Did not play too much of Balder gate, sadly picked it up later down the line, but love DOS so will be a day 1 buy for me I suspect.

I don't think it has to be real time with pause, but it absolutely has to be the D&D ruleset.

From the quick bit of reading I've done I'm not sure if this is D&D or Larian's own hybrid ruleset?

This.

Larian would have done well no matter what this game was called, but by making Baldurs Gate 3 they're taking away the opportunity of long term fans to have a proper sequel. The majority of people who seem happy about this almost always state that they're big fans of DOS, and often that they haven't really played the Baldurs Gate games. So why are Larian invested into this series when they're clearly not interested in making a BG game? They could have just made a DnD game set elsewhere, everyone would have been fine with it.

Was hard to tell from the gameplay demo, especially with it being prealpha, I guess a lot of the rules/skills/etc shown in the gameplay demo will change/be removed/be added before release.

I'd imagine for a simple reason. To make money (as you would expect)...look at it this way , if Larian make a DOS3 then all the fans of DOS2 will probably buy it. If they make a DOS styled BG3, then all the fans of DOS2 will buy it (just as they would have with a DOS3) but if even 30% of the BG fans also buy it then they've increased their marketbase from 100% to 130%, makes good business sense.

From the brief bit of info they shared in the gameplay video, the system seems to be at least partly based on the 5th Edition D&D rules... whether they've warped it into some weird blend of 5th Edition and whatever rules D:OS used is yet to be discovered.

Quite probably the case.

It's unfortunate but ultimately greed tends to drive these things.

Understandable though, they're a commercial company, its their job to make money rather than do us favours so to speak and from a business sense I can see the logic behind it. They could have opted for the reverse of course, do it in the BG style and get 100% of the BG fanbase and hopefully 30% of the DOS fanbase but that might not have been as viable as I would say that BG is harder to get into for a newcomer to its mechanics than DOS is, so the route they've gone with it probably the more feasible route for an increase of userbase

Pretty sure in the video swen (larian dude) says that they were asked by wizards of the coast to use the dnd 5 rule set which as is dnd is turn based not rtc with pause. so everyone saying that its larian's fault that its turn based should be asking questions of wizards instead!
