Band of Brothers Rewatch

Watching masters of the air and been recommended this, will give it a go.

There's also The Pacific. Release-date wise, it goes BoB > The Pacific > Masters of the Air. They not directly related or reference each other in the slightest, but they're seen as companion shows to each other as they're all a similarly lengthed WW2 mini-series, and some of the same people on the production side are involved with two or more of the projects.

A treat indeed, got through 4 episodes yesterday and will continue later today, its funny how young some of the cast are though :)

Will check out The Pacific too.

EDIT: I always see Damien as Brody, although he was good in Billions too.

Just finished it, what an epic series.

Now watching E11, seeing Bill Guarnere on crutches in the Bastogne woods, his right leg gone :(

They're all gone now, the men in this episode, but a fascinating watch to get their personal insights on their experiences.

I hope they're all at a bar in heaven, with their fallen comrades, having a beer or two.

I finished it too, started Pacific now.

What’s E11, there’s only 10 isn’t there?

E11 is where some of the actual survivors of Easy Company talk about their experiences during the war, interspersed with WW2 newsreel footage.

Fascinating watch. And also sad, because they have all passed now.

And as mentioned above, they have Bill Guarnere with one of his buddies walking around in the forest next to Foy, reminiscing.

Finished The Pacific. Probably said this last time I finished it but it’s not really a patch on BoB. It feels too disjointed in the way it starts out with Leckie’s squad then moves over to Sledge’s squad.

BoB has a bit more of a logical structure as it progresses through the war (partly just due to familiarity with the history) whereas Pacific just seems to jump between the islands, which makes it feel a bit pointless. You don’t really get the overall picture of what they’re trying to achieve.

Also had the filler episodes like the one in Australia, the one where Basilone got married and the last episode.

Really misses the interviews from the veterans too which added a lot of weight to BoB (I know that’s because most of them had passed away before the series was made).

Edit - Generation Kill rewatch starts tomorrow. I hope the neighbours can’t hear all of this gunfire and explosions.

I’ll have a search for it as didn’t show up under normal listing.
Search specifically for "We Stand Alone Together". It's on Youtube in full.
It hit me harder than any of the episodes of BoB itself.
Whenever there were bits about the reunions it was heart-wrenching as there will never be another.

Generation Kill rewatch completed. It’s great but more about leadership incompetence / pointlessness of the mission than anything. There isn’t all that much genuine heroism or successful combat manoeuvres.

I like to refer to GK as - Professionalism in the face of general incompetence - that seems to be the biggest take-away i.e. Brad discussing '01-'02 Afghan and how it was just the teams themselves running everything in the field whilst officers stayed on base whilst Iraq '03 was all those "desk" officers suddenly getting on the frontline without having any experience, and mostly doing silly stuff for medals/promotions rather than because of good leadership.

Crammed in the last 4 episodes tonight. Have to say, they also crammed in so much in each of the episodes. Running around 55-70mins average (I think) I started to wonder if I missed certain scenes! So many stand out scenes in the last 2 episodes, especially. Every time I watch this show, I remember 'Why we fight' all about the 'camp', but its full of other things. 'Points' is another, the last episode. They get into Berchtesgarden, Eagles nest, Nixons dream booze cellar, the replacement beating, Shifty going home, the swims in the lake, baseball, German General speech with Lipton given the chance to be there, the the list goes on. So, so much in 1 episode. testament to great film making/directing/screenplay.

Yet again, I cried at Why we fight and the 'wars ended' with the men running to the tents. Winters voice over saying what the men did after the war made me well up too. After 2+ years away from home doing what they did, juts to go back to 'normality' for want of a better word. Crazy.

Oh, to add. Liebgott, I have no idea how he held himself together when talking to the survivors, telling him, Wir Juden. He was a Jew himself if I remember correctly. That must have affected him somewhat.

Terrific TV, ******* terrific.

Well convinced GF to watch it finally and so I got to watch it for the first time at the weekend. Binged the entire series.

Epic stuff. Just goes to show that with a good script and great actors you just cant go wrong. Never realised who was in it.

Was reading up afterwards about the mistakes in the program. Lt Dike didnt bottle it and wasnt a coward. Seems he had lead many successful attacks before Foy and won 2 bronze stars and the only reason he stopped pushing forward at Foy was he got shot/injured. Hence he got replaced. Seems strange that the survivors of Easy Company should re write his role so much. Perhaps they just hated him?

Also Blithe didnt die of his injuries. He went on to fight in the Koren War and got married and had two children. They say Easy company lost touch with him after the war and just assumed he had died.

Was also angry that so many of them survived the war and then ended up being killed or injured by stupid things like a drunk driver.

This thread has reminded me, I was in the USA a few times in the late 1990s for a WW2 weekend at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, PA. One year they had some of the surviving members of the Enola Gay crew and one year they had members of Easy Company. This was after the book was written but before the TV show.

I'll have to have a look and see if I've got any photographs in an album somewhere and if so, get them scanned.

Where did you find GK or is it a case of getting the sailing boat out? I only watched it once when it aired, however long ago that was. Only bits I remember are the smoke grenade ricocheting off the ground and killing a civilian and them bombing the absolute fudge out of a village with bad intel.

On Amazon but I had to pay for it (maybe a tenner). Sure it will be on the other platforms too.
