Wow!

"Modern cars are safer than older ones" shocker!

So you'd rather be in a 15 year old Golf rather than an NCAP 5 star car?

Really?

You do realise that you'd be more likely to both survive a crash (and survive uninjured too) in the 1007?

Of course.
How likely are you to crash that hard against something that it matters how many stars it has ?

I would far rather own a 15 Yr. old golf than a 1007.
Wait, scrap that, I'd like the 1007 so I can sell it for more than the golf and get a car more to my liking.

As for safety, it's the second last thing I'd look for in a car :

loads of stuff ( perf, comfort, costs, looks, etc)

The bottom 2 things I really don't care much about ( though I will appreciate ''safety'' driver aides like ABS. ESP is great for winter too, but how a pedestrian comes off for ramming him or how well the crumple zones work, I don't care.

Ahhh, you can tell when the school holidays come around ;)

What do you drive (if you are old enough that is), I presume something like the latest M3, or is it more like a hyundai i30 or possibly a daweoo 'genericexia'?

I have read your other posts, but it is worth picking up on the stupidity of the first one :D:D

If you must know a 9 year old seat Ibiza.

If you must jump on to one stupid post i made and then miss the ones that i explain what i meant that's fine.

Theres a difference between having a banger and having a 15 year old car becuase you like it,

but fair enough its probably right to be attacked for that post as it was rather stupid and i didn't explain it right. :p

Judging by what you have admitted to do on public roads in previous posts, I find it very worrying that you care so little about safety...

I also find it highly ironic that you also claim not to care about Safety, and yet drive a Volvo :D.

If I crash it's my own stupid fault, that's all. I only drive like an idiot on empty roads or very quiet situations.

I picked this car because I like having space in the boot to pack stuff, and it's the only car I could get for the budget I had that would do 120mph, and has loads of features ( I must have at least aircon, but preferably CC, which I have, I want cruise control, and I liked the fact it had heated seats, mondeo's in the same price range were crap.) and is reasonably reliable ( they still sell for 1500 even with mileages of 350k km or more), so far it flew through MOT with no problems and I only bought cheap nylon bearings for the gearbox, a few bulbs, a tyre and a thermostat so far in the past 8000km. Not because it was the first car to get 4 stars from Euro NCAP, because it has front and side impact airbags, etc...

Do you not have a sense of self preservation?

Yes, don't crash...It's not like I always drive like an idiot, I just get tempted once in a while, mostly at times like 1-5 am... I try to drive economically usually as It's costing me too much money if I rag it everywhere.

Not always possible. When you're sitting in hospital with no legs, are you still going to be glad you went with a less safe car?

Err of course not, but It's not something I consider such a great risk to get a more rubbish car for. I will pick a car depending on how I like it, not how safe it is in the book...

In an ideal world I'd have enough money to get the car I like, and it happens to also be a safe car, but money doesn't grow on trees, and I'm still a student with only an evening job...

I do drive one of the safest cars you an buy for the money it costs atm, but It's not something I'd pay too much attention at, I still quite want a 4th gen prelude vtec, just because it's not as save as the Volvo it won't stop me from getting it when I have enough money.

Can I be the first to point out that only works when you're the only car on the roads?

Which is pretty much always the case when I'm taking a hoon . Even on the motorway you can drive for 5 minutes and not see another car on your half/direction.

During the day I only really drive in 30 mph zones and stuck in traffic. Not that likely to die at those speeds I think.

Its quite possible to be badly hurt doing 30...and just because you stick to the limits, doesnt mean the person who sideswipes you does

Ok, but I don't find it a big enough risk to choose a car primarily for it's safety. I find other things simply more important.

No thats fair enough, I dont think theres a single person on here who bought their car because of the NCAP rating...the points were, it does matter - especially if you're carrying around a family. And you can be killed by other road users, so it's not just your risk

Whilst you dont need to spend 5-6k on a good car nowadays, surely you can do better than a proton:p

Generally im a bit of ***** when it comes to cars (says the bloke who has had 4 new cars in his life time). I find because im fairly handy with cars, I dont really want to spend any more than 2-3k on a car. Many people who practise bangernomics tend to be like this, buy a cheap car and diy on the whole. I remeber when I used to sell cars on the side, as long as the car had some MOT and 4 good tyres, it wouldnt stay in my possesion for too long.

You can buy so many good cars for under 1k nowadays.

This.

The whole "If I crash, it is my own fault" mindset is extreme narrow-minded for this reason alone, and I have to admit that I've found myself using it in the past when someone has commented on the safety aspect of my car.

Saying that, It won't have a single iota of bearing on my choice for a next car, but it really is something that you might want to bear in mind.

Even if someone else is completely at fault for the accident, it would still be my own fault and tough luck for using the car in the first place, it's a risk I accept for driving in the first place... It's not like I need a car, everywhere I go I can go another way too.
