An improvement on his form this season then!
There's a lot of talk about the challenges Chelsea will be facing next season with their rivals looking to strengthen in the summer, but the problem is that the best squad wins the league and even with 3 new players MU can't compete. They've got an aging winger and a defender in the centre of midfield, and are still relying on Silvestre from time to time. OK so Smith and Heinze will be back next season but the fact they need them just serves to illustrate my point - aside from maybe Terry and Lampard, Chelsea can easily soak up injuries and bring in other quality players from the squad to replace them. What's the betting they'll be even stronger next season with the purchase of Ballack and perhaps another striker?
The first choice lineups for Chelsea, Liverpool, MU and Arsenal are all capable of beating each other, but in terms of squad depth there's no contest. Here's two teams Chelsea can put out:
.................Cech
Ferreira...Terry...Gallas...Del Horno
...............Makelele
..........Essien.....Lampard
....Cole......Drogba.....Robben
.................Cudicini
Johnson...Huth...Carvalho...Bridge
SWP.....Geremi...Maniche.....Duff
...........Crespo...Gudjohnsen
OK so the second team isn't exactly world beating, but it's fine for domestic cup matches; in the league/CL they aren't going to have 11 first choice playerws missing. It's also considerably better than second XIs for anyone else.
