Battlefield 3 RETAIL Performance Thread

Very true (on both counts).

As for my issue I've been in contact with EA live support and thanks to a tip from somebody on my origin friends list I have managed to wangle a full English (no not egg bacon etc etc) retail cd key from them to replace my cheap as chips Russian version in an attempt to solve my problem, d/loading it now :)

Was hoping that all on High (HBAO/SSAO and motion blur off) would run at 60fps constant on my 2500k and 6950@6970 at 1920x1080, but it doesn't seem to.

Its mostly 60fps, but looking across large maps or being close to explosions and smoke makes it drop down to 40-45fps. Ultra is the same oddly, doesn't seem to affect my frame rate much going down to High from Ultra.

Strange considering on my Q6600 3.2ghz with a 5850 I can run at High with HBAO and motion blur on at 1920x1080 and average around 45fps.
Large maps and explosions only dropping it to 35.
Surely your setup could do a solid 60fps.

Ok people, manged to get it running after having to install Google Chrome as IE9 wouldn't let the addons install to be able to connect to a server. Anyway the facts, was able to select custom for graphic settings and run with AA off, HBAO off and same with motion blur @ 1680x1050 with everything else on ultra my 5770 crossfire setup was maxing at 80+fps never dropping below 60. This with latest 11.10 drivers and CAP4 albeit jerky at times which was weird as frame rate (using the render draw fps command) didnt drop to match it.

Good to hear you got it sorted buddy, use firefox here myself which has been pretty solid. The game still has a few issues such as bad lag which can make it feel as if its running slower.

I'd say I average 60fps, but I don't keep it constant, which I thought I could with it on High. Its still very playable, but I guess I was hoping too much!

Gareth, just noticed your new toys, how are they?

Anyone know if the game uses renderaheadlimit like BC2?
And if so, what is the default for BF3?
And would reducing it also reduce CPU usage and increase GPU usage instead?
I don't know if the game uses renderaheadlimit, but you can add it via the console:

RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit Int32

I had the same problem as you with everything on ultra but its fine on high, after checking the ram usage it was using all 4 gig so maybe upgrading to 8gig will help.

I figured this out too today. I started using chrome in the background to launch the game, closed steam and all other processes, aero effects in win 7 and voila. Fixed the stuttering.

I have an overclockers i5 bundle at 4.4ghz on 4gb of ram, which I presume means that if I buy more ram - it will throw out my overclock and void my warranty? I am pretty sure that ram is my issue.

ram was my issue, i brought more and now its fine.

Could anyone clarify where I stand on ram & my overclock + warranty (which I've used support for quite a few times already - glad I got it as I had a dodgy overclock out of the box)

I want to buy more ram now, but can't until I figure out the implications of doing so.

I doubt adding more ram to your ocuk built system will void any warranty so long as you dont damage any parts whilst installing the ram.

That would be ridiculous if that was the case.
