Battlefield 3 RETAIL Performance Thread

Hi
I will be buying the game soon - any idea of what to expect with the following rig:

i7 950 @ 4.4ghz
12 gb patriot gaming ram
Rampage 2
128gb SSD
ATI 2GB 6950 TF3 OVERCLOCKED
Custom Water cooling

Should I think about CF 6950?

Cheers

With that spec you'll be running mostly on Ultra with some on High. That's to have the FPS hovering around 60fps and above. If you CF 6950s you'll be set for years :)

Excellent, thanks for the reply. I am tempted to CF but cards will be sandwiched due to the layout of the Rampage 2, so just a little worried about heat issue. Case is a Silverstone TJ07 with custom water on CPU so it is cool but still worried about heat of cards

Cheers

I have about a 12mm gap between my 5850s in crossfire. The top card always runs hotter than the bottom one, but my temps never go above 60C with fan speed at 50%.

The 6950s are cooler cards, but you've overclcoked yours so they will run hotter but nothing to worry about. Get another 6950.. get it... GET IT! lol What PSU have you got?

Im getting very good performance with my i7950 anf 5870, on ultra and no aa. Although i am getting random slow down for 5-10 secs when fps go down to 20

Thanks for the reply. I have a Seasonic 900w, but these are beasts and capable of over 900w output. It previously ran 2 gtx 460s in SLI and before that 2 8800gtx in SLI so she has been around the block but still going strong

Cheers

Everyone is saying that the game is heavily GPU limited and that CPU speed makes little difference (so long as you have a quad core), but is this in SP or MP?

The reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure my Q9550 @ 3.4ghz is causing fps drops (usually less than 40fps and sometimes lower than 30fps) when looking at a panorama of the battlefield on 64 player servers (especially on Caspian Border and Kharg Island). People with same graphics card (5870) but faster CPUs are claiming to get better fps, even though most of the online benchmarks say that CPU speed makes little difference.

I am pretty sure CPU does play a large part in this game.

There are times when I can have a scene rendered in front of me, and while I am getting sub 60 fps, my GPU usage is nowhere near 100%

Yup, multiplayer is defo limited by CPU. I was on a q6600 @ 3.4, got minimums of less than 30fps along with 60% gpu usage. Got an i5 750 now, doesn't dip below 45 and gpu is always at 100%

I have a massive problem where my 560Ti and i5 @4.4ghz run every game at max settings at 1680 x 1050, the beta fine too.....but not the retail version. I have tried various drivers and rolling back. You'll see it goes all weird and tries to catch up on itself, really annoying and means I can't fly anything or drive anything. Nor can I play big maps.

It starts with my trying to spawn... and it not responding, but catching up. Then when I shoot the gun you can see what happens.

Mostly happens on larger levels or when I come into contact with a vehicle - mostly of the flying variety. Then goes nuts when I try to respawn.

Any ideas? Settings are at high, with no HBAO, AA, V sync. Have tried a mixture and these settings run most of the other maps with only some stuttering, but still ruining this game for me after spending so much on my pc already.

Would changing the overclock make a difference maybe?

FIXED :) Bought 4gb more ram to make 8gb total......and it seems to work. How every frustrating, but amazing to play on full settings again.

Decided to benchmark this game during a recent multiplayer match (Conquest, Caspian Border). Here are the average FPS results for each setting (1680x1050):

Low: 47
Medium: 46
High: 43
Ultra: 34

Is it me or are these ridiculously low? Running the rig in the sig... is the CPU going to be the cause? Will upgrading to a Core 2 Quad help?

With only a Core Duo, that's to be expected.
Would upgrade to at least a C2Q. Though probably best to go for the entire platform and move to SB?

I'd ordered a Q9550s from somewhere before I realised what my benchies were like. Gonna whip that in when it finally arrives (from Hong Kong) and see how it improves. If poo I may re-sell it and go SandyBridge. Gonna be limited to socket 1155 though as I don't want to have to fork out for triple channel RAM.

Just installing as we speak!

What settings will i need to run this well with the following rig:
i52500k
MSI z68a-G55g3 (auto OC processor to 4.2gh)
8gb Corsair Vengance 1600
h100
6950 2gb tf3 (no idea how to OC btw)

Cheers and help i want it to look as best as it can!
