BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

Very sad if it happens. Other than Eddie Jordan being on screen the BBC F1 coverage has always been the best.

:D

The Guardian has a very good article about this. They want to save the money for other flagship sports such as Wimbledon. But that contract runs out in 2014.

Given that BSkyB will be paying far more than £16.5m per year for full live rights, which it will exploit across all platforms, the expectation is that Bernie Ecclestone has again negotiated a significant increase of the total flowing into the sport.

:(

And...

It is understood that the deal was signed at 5am in order to enable Sky to unveil it before it announced its results to the City. The new deal will give added impetus to ongoing attempts by News Corp, which owns 39% of BSkyB, to put together a consortium to buy Formula One from the venture capital group CVC.

What makes it even worse is half the races will still be on BBC - so if i do get sky i would only need it for 10 races...such bull.

I think sky have said no adverts during the races so it wont be all bad but i just stinks that there wont be an option to just purchase the F1 and not all the other turd that comes along with it...oh and if you want HD then thats extra....

Also i really think the presenting team on the BBC make the whole thing so much more enjoyable. I really hope sky dont split them up by offering big money. Jake obviously does lots of BBC stuff so dont think he will go but maybe the others might which would be a real shame.

Just finished my BBC complaint for whatever its worth - is so annoying you cant vote with your feet

Couple of things that has struck me is as Im definitely not getting Sky Sports or interested in watching lower quality programming on the BBC (lets be honest they will more than likely just using the FOM feed will maybe their own commentators (at best) and have a much reduced pre-/post-race presentation - just like MotoGP is covered today) so Im already quite disilliusioned by the current season and if I can be bothered to watch the climax of it...

What Im now thinking is that theres zero reason for me to look into going to a race next year - I was actually considering Silverstone (due to new setup), Turkey and/or Singapore - but whats the point if Im not watching the season.

I know ultimately F1 is a world sport and so any of our actions are mostly insignificant, but I think its quite depressing how poorly the UK public has been treated considering we are supposedly the home of F1. In reality F1 is still a marginalised sport, but to treat its coverage like football in the UK really appears to be a great way to reduce the viewing figures in this country significantly...

Oh well thats 15years of a personal era about to close...

Also it's probably been mentioned but people with sky get the ability to login and watch online and can register 4 different computers. Only the main one gets the movies but i think all get sports so if you know someone who doesnt use them this might be ideal. I use my dads to watch football every now and again.

Refering tot hat Guardian article. I doubt very much that News Corp would be allowed to buy the rights to F1 off of CVC due to competition laws around owning the broadcasting rights and the broadcasting network of a sport.

According to that Guardian link, the BBC were paying £50m a year for exclusive rights to all F1 GPs. Under the new deal they'll be paying £33m for half of that? Erm - value for money?

I wonder if the BBC would have prioritised Tennis over F1 if the Head of BBC Sport was a man...

Because they aren't interested in the sports they show?

If Sky were doing a £10 a race kind of PPV then I MIGHT be ok with it as long as the coverage was good. But I wont be stumping up £20 for a months worth of sports when a) I only actually need it for half the races, b) I don't need it during the off season c) I cant stop paying for the month that they take off mid season or when they have a 3 week gap or when it transpires that the BBC have the only two races that month.

Looking at next seasons calender, I wouldn't want a sub for the whole of August as that's when the summer break is, and I wouldn't want one for December January or February as that is the close season. That's £80 spent for something I don't want and can't cancel for the 12 month contract.

Tht's before we even get to the 3 week gap between India and Spain and whatever races the BBC would be covering.
Im sure Sky will ensure where BBC cover races within a rolling month theyll have an exclusive race to ensure you cant remove the Sky Sports sub for the month...

Im a footy fan but even that doesnt justify a Sky Sports sub for me - I just dont have the time to dedicate in front of the TV to justify the sub even with F1 added onto it. Im just not Skys target demographic as I have no interest for what they consider is programming across their channels.

well i just had a thought, at least i will be able to record the practices rather than having to watch them on the stupid unrecordable red button.

?

I can record the Red Button now.

And I expect practice will also be on Interactive on Sky and not on the main channel.

You couldn't remove it even if you wanted to. As far as I remember when you sign up for sports its for 12 months and you can't drop it. If you do drop it and come back, its another 12 months.

you may be able too, but myself watching on BBC red button via my sky box cant as sky doesn't allow you to record an interactive application

Sky can get ****ed quite frankly, I certainly have no intention of signing up for F1, the cost of it is just beyond stupid.

I'll be relying on my trusty friend Mr Internet and his wonderful array of helpful occupants to access the races live I think.

Personally I'd rather the BBC didn't have any coverage at all. That it ALL went to somebody else, even Sky.

At least then it would give the current commentary team (Brundle, Coulthard, EJ and Jake) a single employer on which to focus their efforts.

As it stands, it's going to be impossible to have a single consistent commentary team and therefore every other race is going to have no continuity from the last one.

I do wonder however whether the words "usenet" and/or "cccam" gained new a prominence today amongst F1 fans.

Team principle briefing this afternoon, to tell them the inns and outs of the deal,
So by tonight we should know how peed of the teams are.

But technically News Corp does not own a majority of Sky, the bid was dropped following the voicemail scandal.
I wonder what happens if News Corp obtain F1 and then bid for full control of Sky after that?

Don't really bother me too much. The live feed is the same all over the world. All I want is Jake Humphrey / EJ / DC / Martin Brundle to be moved over to Sky.

You are joking? Thats not the way it works on VM unless the offer you ordered required you to have Sky Sports as a minimum. Normally you can add SS whenever you want but have to keep it for 30days before you can take it off again...

Wow thats stupid as the red button is really just a hidden channel (301 usually) - I can tape it on my PlayTV (freeview box on the PS3) by directly going to it...
