BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

making it on sky will make it harder for the sport to actually grow in viewing numbers within the uk surely?

weve seen the viewing figures go up and up since it was put on the bbc

My Grandad hasnt missed a race for a long time. There is no way a pensioner can afford £60 a month to watch Sky Sports. Feel gutted for him, at least with me i can download the race illegally he is screwed

My grandparents have Sky but we don't!

They don't use the Sky Go online player thing though... Hmmm, wonder if I can use it...

Exactly. This is the issue the sponsors (and by association the team, as that's where there money comes from) have.

A move to Sky means a massive drop in viewing figures and a much slower growth after that. I imagine many sponsorship deals are based on TV viewing figures.

If all the teams kicked up a fuss about it do you think it would matter?

The trouble is that it's technically still on Free for View, just not live for half of the races. This was presumably partly done so that Bernie was technically still honouring the Concorde agreement.

Had it been the case that it was going from BBC altogether, I think the teams would rightly be more up in arms. As it stands right now, I don't think they know what to do, judging by some of their comments.

The fact that the Beeb publicly let it slip that they couldn't afford F1 and were looking to cut it doesn't help the teams either... because it's not good making a fuss about it unless a free to air broadcaster can take it. Last week speculation that only really Channel 4 could afford it.

F1 fans have had a free ride for too long, you're getting partially shafted now as well! :p

Still, the Sky services are fantastic so I don't see why people have an issue paying for them.
Free ride? We pay for a TV licence and last time I looked THAT WASNT FREE

I'm not paying for Sky just to watch F1. We had it before and it was a waste of money for the most part IMO. I rarely watch TV and F1 was probably the only program I would sit down for hours to watch.

Oh well, looks like I'll be using livestream sites to watch it. Bit upset tbh :(

one thing to remember is that the UK is only one of many countries that show F1, a lot of sponsors wont care about this at all.

Though I agree, I wouldnt be surprised if the deal Sky have hatched to share coverage with BBC is to mask this intial drop in viewing figures when they pick it up. Its when BBC stop any F1 programming that the sponsors will have a real idea the value of the deals and ultimately I cant see how they wont reduce the money coming into the teams - will the money coming from Sky cover this? Unlikely considering the vast figures we are talking about and how many sponsors are involved in F1

Because they aren't interested in the sports they show?

If Sky were doing a £10 a race kind of PPV then I MIGHT be ok with it as long as the coverage was good. But I wont be stumping up £20 for a months worth of sports when a) I only actually need it for half the races, b) I don't need it during the off season c) I cant stop paying for the month that they take off mid season or when they have a 3 week gap or when it transpires that the BBC have the only two races that month.

Looking at next seasons calender, I wouldn't want a sub for the whole of August as that's when the summer break is, and I wouldn't want one for December January or February as that is the close season. That's £80 spent for something I don't want and can't cancel for the 12 month contract.

Tht's before we even get to the 3 week gap between India and Spain and whatever races the BBC would be covering.
