BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

We need to get the UK Government petition to 100k, then it's debated in the House of Commons apparently.

It starts on the 7th August, I think we should all actively get people to sign it (even if they aren't F1 fans).

Normally I'm not committed enough to things to take some sort of action, but clearly this time the British public don't agree with it, so it's worth pursuing!

But what can be done? I don't think F1 is worth, or that the BBC should be paying what Ecclestone and CVC are asking. That's where the problem lies and there's nothing the government can do about what they are charging.

F1 has simply become too expensive (for free to air).

Well it's averaging 5-6 mill views per race. What else gets them numbers?

Lots of stuff. F1 was 20th on BBC1. Top Gear on BBC2 also beat it, so it really comes in 21st for BBC programming. ITV had 13 shows above F1's 4.41 million pushing F1 to 34th most popular broadcast.

How about you compare it to other sporting events, as there is no way (or any expectation) that F1 would compete with the big name soaps or long running programs.

None, but then they haven't spend the same as F1 on Eastenders or The One Show either!

Its all linear. BBC have spent loads on F1, which has made the coverage great, which has meant more people watch. In terms of viewer numbers it has done very well for the fact its a sports show.

I have got my response from the BBC complaint. I guess it's not custom and a lot of people on here will be getting them.

But there are some keywords I have highlighted:

Thanks for contacting us regarding the BBC's rights to broadcast future seasons of 'Formula One'.

We understand you are unhappy that the BBC won't be showing all races in future seasons due to the sharing of broadcast rights with Sky.

We know that Formula 1 has an extremely passionate following in the UK and that some fans will be disappointed that not all races will be available exclusively live on the BBC from next season.

We are operating in a very tough financial climate and in common with all areas of the BBC, BBC Sport is having to make significant cost savings over the next few years in order to operate within the constraints of the licence fee settlement, therefore we have to make some difficult choices.

We believe this deal represents good value for money for licence fee payers. We retain live coverage of half of the race weekends and we will have extended highlights of the remaining races so we are pleased that all of the action from Formula 1 for the next seven seasons will remain on BBC television. Online coverage of the race weekends that we broadcast will remain the same, and we will carry all the news and reports from the rest of the season. Radio coverage will not change whilst the most popular races - the British Grand Prix, the Monaco Grand Prix and the final race of the season will continue to be broadcast live on BBC One.

We would like to assure you that we’ve registered your complaint on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and commissioning executives within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are made available across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us with your concerns.

In short, the voice had no impact on the F1, BBC Sport had to make a saving, not the utter drivel department. I can only guess that the BBC sport department is spending rather a lot next year on the olympics and so that's where the money is going.

But it's there is black and white: extended highlights...bummer!

its a bluff from bernie to gain more money out of the bbc like they did with donnington and silverstone now has a contract for a couple of years longer.

im sure the bbc isn't going to let f1 out of their grasp. anyway who cares, sky will show the crap race's which happon at midnight anyway lol.

No reason to be disappointed with the BBC regarding the F1 decision - it was out of their hands. The price Ecclestone and CVC have set is simply way beyond the BBC's budget. That's not the BBC's fault.

That simple isnt true, not when they see fit to spend £22m on new talent shows.

Got the same reply :(

ps3ud0

same, and providing BBC dont cut the quality of the coverage they give.. I often record the races and watch them later anyway..

It's already confirmed that for the races that aren't live, there will be minimal build up and post race analysis, so whether they show the full race or highlights, it's basically already been said that the quality of coverage will go down.

That £22m is ~half what F1 costs, will have ~twice the viewers for ~10x the content. Which makes it ~40 times better value than F1!

It is true that Ecclestone and CVC have set F1's price beyond the BBC's budget, they can't afford the spend that much money on something watched by a relatively small number of people, for relatively few hours.

and they're still spending £15m on F1 every year till 2018. It's nonsense that they cant afford it, they've just chosen to spend money in other area's and played the 'we've got no money' card.
