Be Quiet 500DX

Here it is, my brand new build in the 500DX Case ! I've installed a 240mm Arctic Freezer 2 on top and it fit well with my G Skill Tridentz Z Neo ram sticks.

Nice and one of them there new fangled 3080s!

BTW don't you want to put that in the 1st slot or does that motherboard support 16xpcie at the bottom? [EDIT] Just checked and it does.. neat!

Dude! you are a Legend! I've been researching and looking all day to see if the 240mm Liquid Cooler II would fit up top fine, and this answered my question, i'm also looking at the same RAM too.

It does look nice with the radiator on top.

I've been waiting on a 3080 but couldn't get my hands on one yet. This morning I got a newly released 3070 FE which will be here next week. That will allow me to finally build my new machine. I got the 280mm Arctic Freezer though, so mine will look more like SurfXombie's

Very excited about the built. I may have some questions for all next week when I start putting everything together.

What PSU did u guys use? I got a 750W but I'm wondering if it needs to be bigger.

I got an RMx 850. The cables are quite thick near the connectors because of hear shrink. The RM 850 has more ribbon cables. In the end I'd recommend some sleeved extensions to fit through the cabling gaps better.

Oh and 750w will be fine, unless you have a maxed out OC 9900k or 10900k or something. Even then you should be fine.

Some mods I did that may help:
  • Remove the extra pci slot covers and put a fan mesh thing in place instead (the GPU will pull in air through their and this gives better dust filter)
  • Don't use a HDD or if you do get a 2.5 inch, so you can do away with the HDD tray. This gives you more cable room and air flow
  • If you get a 280mm fan and slim it down (file/dremel) then you can fit it under the 140mm fans from your AIO for extra airflow
  • I put the extra front fan up top, but all teh heat goes out the back fan and some out of the top back one. I do run with to top filter in place too.
  • I used a 3 into 1 Fan cable for the three case fans into one motherboard fan header, and the extra 120 I put at the front goes into the second fan header.
  • I run al the case and AIO fans quite low and it keeps it cool. The main thing that affects the GPU is the GPU fans (undervolting has a great outcome here)

Anyone tried modifying the PSU cover? I have a ROG PSU with led display and obviously can't see the wattage.

Unfortunately, it's riveted in so I haven't touched it yet due to warranty reasons.

I'm looking at either this or the Lancool 2 Mesh. The Meshify C was part of my plans but the limited GPU size has put me off.

Has anyone tried both?

My first choice was for a Lancool II Mesh but no one had them in stock. I also checked out the Meshify C which is a lot shorter.

I wanted to put a 3080 card in plus a thick 280mm radiator, the Meshify C was too small. Also the Lancool II has some issues front mounting a Freezer II 280.

It would really depend on your setup.

Thanks for the input - the Meshify C is definitely off the list then. I'm still keen on the LC2 but as you mentioned stock could be an issue.

I find the 500DX might just be a tiny bit wide for my liking - I'm hoping to upgrade from an Antec 902 V3 (not my smartest purchase but I had always dreamed of having one).

EDIT: After looking through this thread I'm even more conflicted - I really don't like the look of the front panel but it seems like a gem to build in.

I have now built three PCs in this case (Me, Wife, Daughter). I would recommend it but I still feel for me (not the rest of the family) the Meshify would be better.

Okay here is the BAD of the case, in my view.
  • First it is not a huge case, so that comes with the constraints of a box this size.
  • The clearance at the top is not great, you can get a 240 up there but you need to cable the motherboard before you do that and/or use fans up there.
  • The gap in the vertical cable cover (that is removable) is a bit narrow. My 24pin connector has heat shrinking on the cables and would not make the bend through the gap. Solved by using sleeved cable extensions.
  • That vertical cable cover also sticks out, and there is only a small gap between it and my long 3080 (Tuf OC) card. At first I thought it would be an issue but it fitted fine.
  • The hard drive tray in the bottom is solid and will block any air flow from a bottom front fan. I removed mine and it also gives you better room for cables, but it leaves a gap that I covered with a fan mesh. (I actually got a 2.5 5Tb drive and fitted that for my backup storage, these are < £100 if you buy a portable seagate USB drive and extract the drive :) )
  • The glass side panel is held in by 4 screws, no hinges. Though the rubber grommets do make it okay to remove and re-fit.
  • USB-C front panel is nice, only if you have a motherboard that supports this
  • The fans are a little soft and the screws can strip the threads if you don't take care.
  • A little niggle but, they don't fit the fans with the Be-Quiet logo oriented the right way, I refitted mine.
The surprising things I have found
  • The dust filters are great, aside from the "YANK" to get the front panel off. Though very fine dust still gets in.
  • Quiet, my wife ad daughter have them on the desks next to them and they hardly hear them. Only the GPU comes through if you push it.
  • Airflow is great, I have my fans on low and things are good. I tried at 100% and it made little difference.
  • RGB is minimal and a nice touch (my first RGB)
  • Cabling in the back was fine, there are lots of tie point. Get yourself some cheep Velcro ties and have fun
"Mods"
  • I took out the rear PCI slot covers and placed a fan mesh over that area as the GPUs do pull in from there and we have a dusty house (3 big dogs)
  • I also used a fan mesh over the gap left when you take out the HD cage, it needed cutting to fit the radiator bales in.
  • I crammed in a 120 fan after filing down the top and bottom by a few mm. It jams in under the front under the two 140mm radiator fans. Without the HD tray my hope is it offers a bit more air flow into the case for the GPU. The Meshify C Mesh would be much better at this.

Clearance wise here is one with a Palit 3080 in no Radiator and a Tuff 3080 in with a Radiator so you can see the space.

That looks excellent, the points you've made are very detailed so will be pretty useful as I weigh up my options.

Going from a pretty 'archaic-ly' designed case I think I'll be able to ignore the minor negatives a little, and I'm looking for a smaller (read: narrower) case anyway.

First post here so forgive me for barging in.

Built in this case a few months ago at the start of lockdown. Very impressed with it overall. Just make sure you plug the cpu cables in before the motherboard goes in you'll save yourself a bunch of time later on!

Mine did look like this...

ck8EK4F.jpg

I decided i was greedy and wanted the Artic Liquid Freezer 2 360 and didn't really know if it would fit at the front.

So i thought i'd give it a go and if not i would need a new case. Turns out it does fit but only just!

As you can see below the msi 2080 super is so close to the rad!

If you have a 2080 super and are wondering if it'll fit the answer is yes but only just!

Just waiting for my 3080 to be delivered and the 5800x/5900x to be released!

Looks great, that gap is soo small!

Here is mine with the 3080 just housed.

The FE 3080 is not that big in real life :) it is built like a tank though, that's how it feels

BTW, if you have a Be Quiet PSU, you can send a message to their tech support and they will send you 12-pin GPU cable for the PSU free of charge!

You won't need to use those 8-pin to 12-pin adapters.

So after thinking about it I decided that it looked a bit cluttered with the pipes coming up from the front and that I needed something a bit better and cleaner looking.

So after a week or so of researching I end up on the Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic. Now I know these are pretty common and the world and his wife seem to have one but I have to say overall its a fantastic case to build in, probably the easiest I've built in as far as space is concerned it's very much a tardis on the inside. When you consider that the height and depth are almost identical to the 500dx this can fit way loads more hardware inside of it!

For now I have no real plans other than changing the three arctic fans out for some more silent wings 3's which are on order. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for my back ordered 3080 and 5900x to turn up but I work in the motortrade so I know all about backorders and that a piece of string is always very long and to never go by what they tell you.

Only things I've done is added the Phanteks vertical gpu bracket which is a nice solid option and still allows me to use the bottom pci-e slot for a wifi card and also allows you to use the 3 fan slots at the bottom. And if you look closely at the top rear you'll see I've added 2 80mm pure wings 2 fans, not sure if many have done it to this model I know the PC-011 air model already has these holes pre-drilled but this model doesn't. I think many people stick them on with double sided tape if they do decide to put fans there but I went for the more permanent option of drilling the holes out instead. I think it looks ok?! I don't think you can really tell they've been added afterwards! lol

This is nowhere near as good as other peoples builds that are like platinum quality in comparison but I'm really happy with how its turned out so far though.

How are the temps like? I've got the exact same configuration as you except my Arctic cooler is pushing hot air out. Reason for asking is my 3080 FE is hitting 75 and I'm getting a bit worried now.

Might set all three left corner fans to push in. Really confused tbh.

Hey Dan I would be interesting to know what config you have your fans in terms of intake/exhaust etc and what temps are you getting

I have the same case, with a 360mm aio, 6 fans and a phantek verical mount so wondering what the best options were for config.

I've seen a good video from a guy without the vertical gpu mount and his results show that it was best to have intake top and bottom, exhaust side. however gpu in std format blocks a LOT of airflow, and have seen lower temps for gpu/cpu by running the vertical, so this opens up the question of taking side and bottom as input, top and back 80mm as an exhaust..

At the moment I’ve got bottom and side as intakes and top and back as exhaust. Before I vertically mounted the gpu would sit around 65c on load on cpu (3700x) would be in the mid 50’s, vertical mount actually helped with airflow gpu now around 60-62c and cpu is 50-52c under load with the occasional ryzen spike up to 60c and then back down again. I’m waiting for a 5900x which should turn up any day now going to do some of my own testing and possibly swap the top fans for intake and see if that makes a difference to cpu temps. The setup I run currently is actually one that I also saw on a video that suggested it was the best way of running it. I guess realistically there’s no wrong way of doing it it’s just all down to personal preference. And I guess it also depends on how much fan noise you can put up with before it drives you mad I’ve got 11 be quiets in there! lol
