Been offered a job, not sure

Sounds like a really great oppertunity. My family or girlfriend wouldn't be happy with it but it's a once in a lifetime oppertunity and I'm sure they'd understand why, as would yours.

Go for it I say.

Phil.

One of the guy's I used to talk to on another forum was doing something similar but with the Dutch (If memory serves).

From what he said in his case he was always with armed military guards when going outside of the base/compound he was stationed on.

The risks are there, but depending on the job you may never have to go anywhere without military guards (the guy I talked to was working for his MOD as a civilain contractor and basically inside an armed base most of the time).

Gosh, what an interesting dillema to be in.
I notice you mention you have a gf..is this a long term relationship? (i.e have you set up home together?).
You also fail to mention how old you are, I get the impression you're on the 'younger' side of things?

I would carefully weigh up the 'risk' factor with the increased stress on your family and partner.
Sure, in our everyday lives we're all exposed to risks such as getting mugged, being run-over by a car and
so-forth, but quite frankly, I'd rather be faced with that, than getting kidnapped and held to ransome.

You don't need to give details, but some idea what the 'scale' of extra pay is? I personally wouldn't do this
for anything less than triple my current rate, (but thats a personal decision.)

What happens after the 3 month contract? Do they send you home, or do you get the chance to stay on?

I would talk to your family and gf about this and see what they say, but be prepared to have their extra worry
weighing down on you when you're away.

I would go for a few months if the money was excellent and if I knew of any jobs available.

I'd also want to be issued with a pistol or 2 and loads of ammo.

got a bloke next to me who used to work on the oil rigs / fields.
hes been to some very dodgy countries for work where they had constant military / security armed escorts.
he says that 99% of the people he worked with followed 1 rule when selecting a place to work - if there is active kidnappings/killings/raping etc then its not worth it.

I wouldn't go anywhere near personally, only takes one sniper or a speeding car packed with explosives.

Have you inquired as to how this vacancy has come about? ;)

had a similar offer last year, contracts with NATO in areas such as (iirc)
Bosnia, Afganistan, Iraq.

basic IT roles were going for £30,000 (Bos), £45,000+ (Afg) and i guess around 50k or above for iraq, it wasn't specified at the time.

minumum contract was 6 months, up to 2 years.

all pay was tax free, and all accomodation, travel, food was paid for.

was in the process of getting a job in the uk at the time so let this one pass.
