I've been offered a job which sounds like the job of a lifetime. The pay is awesome, its exactly what i want to do. IT and networking. and the whole expierence sounds amazing. Just one wee problem its in iraq.

Its in the green zone so its basically america but even still there is violence, i would get a military escort everywhere. But im just not sure.

would you?

Basically afaik, green zone should = 500 a day,

red zone = 2000 a day

This is based on oil company contract work, if you are young and are working for a good company work there as you will never get the same money any where else. And if you work for a good company ask for a gun when you get there as you never want to be caught with your pants down.

sorry didnt read the thread just posted so sorry if a repeat,

i have 2 months to wait before i have to decide but i have been gaurenteed the job if i want it. Gonna enquire some more about the security aspect of it and will need to decide then. Would definatly want some sort of protection whether it is a security gaurd or a weapon.

im gonna have to spend some time weighing up the options, i think i would regret it, but i value my life aswell.
the job is in the green zone which has been pretty safe for a good few months now, its apparently like a fortrice with thousands of american soldiers (don't know wether thats good or bad).

as far as i remember the money was $1800 a week which is pretty damn good, in fact its awesome.

Mattius,

I will say this once,
YOU WILL NEVER GET OFFERED THE SAME MONEY AS YOU WILL WORKING IN IRAQ,

Oh did I shout that,

If you are you a green zone wont be bad, but as you have said cover your ass, as for a pistol/ak as you dont want to be caught in the kitchen with a knife when they have RPG's, just take your comon sense, if you are in a green section you wont get paid as much as a red but you will be under the same threat, just keep your wits.

You will be stupid not to take it, but ask your company about protection, as if you get caught your dead............. not kidding, you can work in nigeria (which is carp) but if you get kidnapped there its for the money and if you work for some1 decent they pay, Irap is different to every where, as for a gaurd and a gun, tbh you will see how many (sorry to say this) "rag head" you could shoot (from 5-55) when you think you life is in danger.

Without putting a downer on the topic, if you have a security guard, a gun or both to be honest I can't see that stopping a group of militia grabbing you and putting you on TV in a jump suit. I imagine that even in the green zone your'd still need military protection and even then it's gona be a rough ride.

Although thoughts on the forums are great, what do your family and girlfriend think about it?

my girlfriend is more concerned about me being away for 3 months. My dad works all over the world and has been offered many jobs in iraq but has never accepted cause he doesn't think its worth the risk (he was offered £10,000 a week!!!) but then again he said if he was me he would probably do it. Im honestly unsure but have 2 months to consider.

Dude who cares at 500 a day (in the green) and at the militia, they attack unprotected bloody salvation army people and those who work for carp companies, the only compaies I will ever imagine accepting to goto Iraq for are Oil companies as they have the power over there, I would also get a gun, no so I could be a keyboar warrior, I know a lot of expacts who have armed theirs selves for a reason, getting caught neekid with a kitchen knife is differnt to a pistol.

Mattius my dad was offered £2000 a day, its not un-common, I say take it. My dad worked Nigeria for a few months at 20k a month, which isnt uncommon.

rubbish, any decent it contractor / consultant worth his money will get more than £500 a day. Hell i was offered just under £300 a day a few days ago and it would have been my first contract!

Who is it for ???? I can maybe help with you decision !!

I can talk as I am here, but i dont live or work on the green zone. I live in Bagdad and work in the RED zone. Life in the green zone is ok, it is Iraq with local iraqi's living around you. You cannot walk around safely at all you have to walk in a minimum of pairs. There have been a number of kidnap attempts in the zone. The Green zone is a big target for mortar attacks. Its not called the green zone officially anymore, its the International Zone.

Catch me on email if you want to take this off line.

im not entirely sure of the details yet, i know its working in the green zone with a contracter who is working for the us military setting up residential networks and internet access.

OK,

Life in the green zone,as long as you are working an a full US contract is OK as that give you access to the american life support infreastructure. like Pizza Hut, Burger King, Subway, and the american PX (Shop) and the DFAC's (Dining Facilities) if you are not on a US contract you are basically a fully fledged civillian. and are out of the US system. Life is harder that way as everything is done on the local market.

How you move is again down to the company and how they look after you. Personally our company move in large american fully b6/7 armoured SUV & 4x4's with between 3 & 5 vehicles per move. Security in numbers. all of us are ex military even on the admin side, and all of us are armed. Again this is not always the case, and that changes between company.

Find out who the contractor is, and I will find out what they are like, and their safety record out here.

I have been here for just under a year, and the distance from home is a nightmare sometimes, but you get used to it, and the guys you live and work with can either make it a good life or a crap life.

Watch the wording on the contact, some will pay you for your leave (mine does) others dont pay you whilst you are on leave.

Tax is a big issue. To qualify for Tax free Status you have to inform the tax office that you are going expat. Form 85 i think. And you have to be out of the country for one whole tax year april 5th till april 4th to have your earning tax free. any less and you pay tax on the whole of your earnings. You are allowed an average of 92 days in country per year, averaged over 4 years. Get proper financial advice from a tax consultant before you commit, and once you commit, you have to follow it through, or face a nice tax bill.
