Been offered a job, not sure

Even the American army are vulnerable in Iraq. However this "green zone" you speak of should ensure a fair level of security.

At the end of the day it'll be an experience and definitely show any future employers you are committed and willing to take on serious challenges.

£1000 per week IT contracts are plentifull in the UK, and all you have to contend with are trains and/or motorways.

Only if you have special skills and experience! You don't get £1000 a week for being a network engineer (perhaps in London - not familiar with London IT market).

i wouldnt expect any less than £50k a year from contracting tbh. i know there is plenty more to be earned than that.

£200 a day is quite low.

Even if you cant get that now in UK with your skills, do it anyway at the best rate you can, then move into consulting, thats more money again normally.

go to Iraq for sure, if you don't mind being decapitated in the name of Allah.. you hideous disbeliever, western infidel. Let someone else look at a network cabinet in Baghdad.

Khan,

Show me where you have seen contracts for 2K per day in Iraq, as an IT guy. It wont happen.

In baghdad there are currently on average 20,000 civillian personal security operatives working day in day out.

Over the last few days there have been two Telecoms engineers killed and there PSD team (10 x local iraqi team) taken out. You really have to look at the company and how they operate and make that a basis for your desicion. From our intel the guys killed were running around in soft skin vehicles (Un-armoured), Firms that take their security seriously run in fully armoured vehicles with Ex-pat (Non-Iraqi) PSD teams.

There are a lot of views on this forum, but nobody knows what it is really like here - I DO. And i also believe that the $1800 per week is a bit low. Also take into consideration that the figure is based on tax free status. so there are no deductions, no tax, no NI. I would have expected $2500 at least for an IT guy.

i've already said money isn't really an issue. Doesn't matter wether it pays $1800 a week or $18000 a week im not letting money cloud my judgement, i don't need the money. Im looking at going for the other reasons stated in this thread.

Whether you choose to go all depends on what your key drivers are. Once you decide what they are and whats most important it should make the decision a lot easier. All the opinions on here won't help a great deal with that.

Just out of interest, when you say it's the experience, do you mean the job itself or going out to Iraq?

Working out here is an experience and a half, the guys you will work with, and live with will give you some great freindships that will last for a long time. If you ever wanted to be in the army, but didnt like the idea of all the BS that goes along with it, then here is a good place to get that experience.

But again it is all down to who you work for.

The company i work for has everyone of its Expat staff ex military or police. mainly ex-military, and a fair chunk of that is ex-SF types.

Again, that only applies if you have specialist skills (java developer, C++, Oracle etc) AND experience with said skills.

You make it sound like all contractors get paid loads of money! I've been contracting for 2 years and The most I've been on was £135 a day for on-site network/desktop support and that was an excellent wage. I'm usually on £90/day, so please don't make out that it's easy to make £50k a year with contracting, because it isn't, unless you're a programmer.

Personally I would not go.

You obviously have the skills to do the job so why not stick around at home and wait for an opportunity here. Think about your family/gf/friends and yourself of course.

If you do decide to go I wish you the very best.
