Been offered a job, not sure

this risks are massive nd im very put off by it, but its tempting all the same, as i said before its not about the money its the expiereance.

i'll need to find out more details.

I'd say for the money.....no! Also from the relationship side of things.....no!

This is my personal opinion and this is a free country so you can of course do what you like. There are plenty of good IT contracting jobs in the UK if it's a different challenge you are looking for.

With what's going on there, i'd give it a big fat NO even if the pay was good, and even if you got an escort everywhere the military can not stop bullets flying in your direction and it WILL happen judging from the many programs and news reports i have heard.

I'd do it. If nothing else other than to say I worked in a warzone and am here to tell the tale. Don't look at the negatives, look at all the potential positives. Think of what an experience it must be to work in a warzone, think of all the stories, the adventures, the heart pumping blood rushing moments, all the interesting and talented people you are going to meet, etc. What a great and fantastic opportunity to distinguish yourself from 99.9% of the other boring drones on the planet. Do something different.

I had a few beers with a US soldier who was on leave with his wife. He was a network engineer based in Iraq.

He said that people have no idea as to what it is really like there. People are trying to blow you up on a daily basis. Small children will shoot at you.

You can't go anywhere or do anything for fun. Just looking at an Iraqi woman the wrong way can land you in jail for 20 years.

NO!

Your life is worth far more than any money they can pay you. To all those sayin g it will be the experience of a lifetime I don't think its the type of experience you really want.

thinking bout the keyboard comments, everyone is saying no,

DustyMiller gives possibly the best advice, and also, has offered to check into the contractor's history, i'd say go for it, it is an opportunity, nothing else.

I'll sleep soundly in my bed tonight knowing that there arent people who wish to kill me, tbh. Every single one of the "workers" went in thinking the same thing, and much as i "could be run over by a bus tomorrow", I wouldn't go for it.

Bascially, if i was in iraq surrounded by 1000's of AMERICAN soldiers, id be more scared of one of them shooting me by accident than a terrorist!

Id do it without a second thought as long as the pay was worth it but even then i would love to go there and see what exactly is going on there...call it morbid curiosity i guess:).

You might see something terrible which will give you nightmares for a few years.

I think that you'll find that many of the youngsters who joined up for the '14 / '18 war thought that it was going to be the experience of a life time, as did many American boys in Vietnam ....... many of them found out the hard way that it wasn't quite they thought.
I know that you're not being asked to fight a war but don't listen to the gung ho brigade; think hard about it for a long time and try to find out from people out there just how dangerous they think it is etc.

Read the BBC News today about a contractor who just got killed.

1800 dollers a week is what, about a grand a week.

Plus if you're out there for less than a year etc you won't get it tax free.

It's not bad money by any standards, but for that risk I wouldn't do it. But then again, chance of a lifetime and all, honestly couldn't decide without being in that situation myself.

As for getting that pay in the uk, consultant who came to do some work fr me the other day was getting a grand a day an I did all the bloomin' work, all he had to do was come down to the ghetto that is Devon.

Like I said on MSN, I wouldn't do it. Partly for my safety, partly because it would drive my mother mad with worry, but mostly because $1800 isn't fantastic pay considering the circumstances. More than I get now, no doubt, but it would have to be a hell of a lot more to outweigh the negatives. Even then I'd have my doubts about taking it on. Still, it's your call. Just make sure you research it well, talk to your family, and find a replacement for Wednesday night poker!!!!

Important bit highlighted there:p

How can they put you on contract for so long though, if its that risky how do they know your not going to be killed before you fullfilled the contract, surely they can't put you on one, should be more like a daily one lol. :D

Its a 6 month contract, damn he got shot 2x days in. :(
