Belgium Grand Prix 2010, Spa-Francorchamps Circuit - Race 13/19

:)

I like how it's "what happened to Alonso?" rather than "great performance from Massa!". I guess it's too much to expect a little credit being thrown Felipe's way.

If you look at pretty much all the GP weekends this year, you will notice that Alonso is consistently faster than Massa. This race weekend was no different, if you look at the times Alonso and Massa posted yesterday. Then today, for whatever reason, Alonso just seemed to lose it.

It wasnt Massa who moved forward, as he finished up behind the RBR and McLaren, which is roughly where we would expect him to finish. Alonso however, was beaten today by cars which are not as fast as the Ferrari car. This very much goes against the trend we have seen this year and what we saw yesterday.

I'm inclined to believe that Alonso went backwards today, rather than 9 other cars all moving forward.

Removed flexi wings + a track to suit their strengths?

Its possible that the track suits McLaren more than RBR cars, which is why McLaren are more competitive.

Lets not forget that we have damp conditions, which means that the RBR are probably running a set up which is a compromise. Furthermore, when it is wet/damp, driver ability comes to the fore - in the wet, a faster driver in a slower car can beat a slower driver in a faster car (something which doesnt happen often on a dry track). Also consider that Hamilton is a faster driver than both RBR drivers, which allowed him to split them.

Had we had all dry conditions, I would've bet my house that the RBR cars would've been on the front row.

From what I can see, RBR and Ferrari have not made any changes to the flexibility of their wings. Of course, only they will know whether or not they have made changes.

So, in a nutshell, he is saying that the lap where most of the cars set their fastest times, had all the cars on fresh tyres, while he was using a used set.

Something is amiss, because when Alonso did come out on fresh tyres, he was still slow. Meanwhile Hamilton, was able to post the 2nd fastest time.

For his sake, he better hope for a better showing tomorrow. I fully expect him to cruise up at some stage, behind Massa, in the race, tomorrow. We've seen this happen countless times this season.

i think lewis has just been stonking all weekend, he has been half a second faster than button in pretty much ever session. i think with RB compromising the down force to keep the top speed on par with McLaren and the McLaren suiting the track so well they are prob about equal if not a smidge quicker in Hamilton hands.

Hamilton needs to win here and the next race to keep his championship hope alive because the trackes later on rally play to RBs strengths.

cannot wait for the race tomorrow :) not sure i rate buttons chances he seems to have not great starts and loses a few places, tho he has been able to make them back up and should do better due to the speed McLaren has on the straight.

think force india will score well they always look strong here and kubica for top 4 definate.

No Vettel? If it is dry, Vettel is likely to be the fastest driver on the track tomorrow and with overtaking not a problem at Spa, the fastest driver is the guy who will most likely win.

I think that the 2 McLarens and 2 RBR cars will make up the top 4. Button isn't as fast as Hamilton, but he isn't dog-slow either, so should finish in the top 4. If it rains, then Button may finish on the podium.

Kubica is definitely driving well this year.

Although Alonso is ranked (by his peers) as the best driver in F1, I can't help but feel that he is trading on past reputation. IMO Alonso was the daddy of F1 in 2005, 2006 and 2007, however, after that he has faded. He has made costly errors, such as in Monaco (he crashed in practise, up to which point, he was dominating every session) and now in Spa he has compromised his race. By rights, he should be no more than a few points away from the top of the table, as he has a good car under him.

I think a shout out needs to go to the following drivers for doing well in qualifying:

Code:
11. Jaime Alguersuari Toro Rosso-Ferrari
13. Heikki Kovalainen Lotus-Cosworth

Eh, why is Vettel likely to be the fastest driver? He hasnt been the fastest all weekend. Also I recall reading overtaking at spa IS a problem.

If you look back to previous races at Spa, throughout history, there have been plenty of overtakes and opportunities to overtake and generally, the fastest driver on the day tends to win (ie. where normally the fastest driver may get stuck behind a slower car, this doesnt tend to happen at Spa). It is rare where a driver will get stuck behind a slower car in front.

If you look back over the last few races, Vettel has been the fastest driver, at many points during the race. If you take the last race for instance, he was the fastest, but got stuck behind (I think it was Alonso), after he had his stop go penalty.

(If past performance is anything to go by), there is high likelihood that had we had a dry qualifying today, Vettel would most likely have been on pole as he is, in general, faster than Webber (he is a better qualifier - check the results for this year and last).

For the above reasons, it is likely that as long as we have a dry race, that Vettel should be the fastest and if this is the case, there is a fair chance of him winning.

I can't see anything but Red Bull being ****** by the Ferrari and Mclaren (maybe even Kubica in the Renault) in a straight line.

Before qualifying (just as in most races), people seemed to believe that a non-RBR car will be on pole. After quallifying, we discover that RBR is still the fastest car.

There is no reason to believe that RBR will be outpaced by another car, UNLESS it rains.

I totally understand that the Brits like to support the underdog, but you have to be realistic...RBR have the fastest car. They have an almost 100% record when it comes to qualifying and have rarely been outpaced in a race.

Rain is probably going to be the deciding factor tomorrow.

That is wrong, though. La Source was wet when Hamilton was doing his lap, without that he would have been on pole by a margin. My prediction is Hamilton getting past Webber either at T1 or Les Combes and running away with it, rain or not.

I agree that hamilton produced a stonking lap, but had it been bone dry, Vettel wouldve had the confidence to push hard and extract the max from his car (just as he did in previous dry race/qualifying).

You forget that Hamilton is probably the fastest driver in F1, so in damp conditions, it is no surprise that he outperformed the opposition. On a bone dry track though, based on past performance, Vettel wouldve got pole, in a car which is unquestionably the class of the field.

.

 no one expected anything else other than rbi on pole, everyone thought mclaren would be well down the grid and Ferrari further up than they are. But few people expected anything else than rbi on pole.
People did say it will suit mclaren more which it does, doesn't mean they thought they would be on pole.

Amended starting grid following penalties, couple of qualy ones as well for blocking. Not sure what you need to do to get a three vs five drop for blocking though
