Benchmarks for AT HD 5870

conversely everyone I know uses vsync on fps.

vsnyc introduces a tiny amount of lag and noticeably affects me when playing fps. It isn't a huge deal - fine for single player - but is the difference between being able to say snipe and twitch aim effecitively in a clan match.

Seems there are a lot of people that expect far too much of these 5 series cards. people expecting the 5870 to thrash a gtx 295 is just stupid. As drunkenmaster has previously said it's not really been done before and why would this change. If you want a card that will beat the 295 significantly you'll be wanting an x2 then wont you.

Personally if those benchmarks listed are true i am rather impressed. Imagine what the 5890 will turn out like.

There is also this to consider also:

remember therse a pre release beta drivers, so these may change, if the drivers we got for the 4000 series come into play with the 5000 then say goodbyeish to the 295

Overall i think these new cards are looking rather good, how good they are is going to be very much dependant on price i think.

Looks impressive if those benchmarks are true. One HD5870 looks to be around the performance of my GTX260-216 SLI setup.

Luckily the mrs has said I can have two :).... of the X2 cards :D

I will probably get two of the normal 5870's or wait to see what Nvidias answer will be before buying.

Conversely I can choose resolutions and settings where the 5870 wins every test.

/waves hands and mumbles something about glass houses.

are you following the thread? i said before 1920 is my resolution and the drunk guy said the 5870 its better with aa which is not. go play with your mac now.

I think the general concensus is yes. Certainly in CrossFireX. The GTX295 is already reduced by 30-50% in P55 motherboards with only 2 x 8x slots in Quad-SLi.

Thanks, that means the 5870 will be bottlenecked by my 8x if i xfire them. (assuming its about same as 295, which benchmarks sujest)

Hope the people who just got the new P55 arent wanting xfire lol.

I run Vsync in certain games, it's very smooth that way, GTA4, Res Evil 5 and Batman are teh current one sthat are butter smooth with it on, minor tearing with it off. FPS games get no vsync treatment though :p

What settings do you use to get gta IV smooth, I'm finding bizarre FPS drops in that game?

I'll post my settings tonight when I get it!

I get average 30fps really, it's smooth and doesn't stutter since patch 1040 either. I'm just playing through the game again so I can get the damn mobile so I can spawn nice cars and go cruising :p

Been using vsync for over a year now, even with BF2, thing is if I turn it off I cant bare the tearing, it looks almost like bad lag when playing BF2 with no vsync on, my eyes have come accustomed to having vsync on for so long, with it off it looks awful.

Interesting stuff.

I was looking at upcoming pc games and theres nothing on the horizon which looks overly taxing to me but we'll have to see...

Yes the 295 manages to beat out the SINGLE gpu 5870 by a few percent and that difference can be made up with mature drivers making the 5870 a comparable card to the DUAL gpu 295. Some people will never be happy we have a card here that is offering close to 295 performance for less money what more do people realistically expect. Add in the lower power usage lower heat and none of us knowing how well a 5870 will oc and we have one hell of a card whats so hard to see and understand in that. Also a 5870 getting 100fps and a 295 getting 110 fps seriously who will notice i am still massively looking forward to my 5870X2 which will without doubt beat out the 295.

Depending on your rig have you tried raising the fps limit, i did and it works a treat
