No, it's more or less the same and with AGP version you don't have the hassle of swapping out a motherboard...

AM2 itslef doesn't but I would seriously hope the new processors would!!! :D

Its not the same. Its cheaper FACT ;)

Hassle of swapping a mobo?

Please If i could save 100 quid and have a faster pc swapping a mobo would be no hassle at all.

I stopped reading here, sorry. Read this link and this link in regards to 256MB vs 512MB and call it a day.
The fact remains it's not the same card... It's easy to post price comprissons for different spec cards and then ignore the facts... I'm not comparing the merits of 512/256mb, just the prices. There is a comparable 512mb PCI-e card so please use if for price guide.

You brought up the price comparisson - at least have the decency to use similar products :D

Not sure I agree that the 1800 will kick "seven shades" out of the 7800GT+ (7900GT) i'm afraid.. I'm not up to date on bench marks and comparissons and so could be wrong but I get

3DMark06 - 4532
3DMark05 - 8714

on my 7800gs so i'd be suprised if the 1800 is so much better to kick "seven shades".

Either way i doubt many people would complain about the speed of this "dead standard" card :D

But you're not saving £100. The Gainward PCI-e version of the card plus a PCI-e motherboard would be £40 or £50 more...

What i'm trying to (and have several times ;) ) say is there is very little if any difference at the moment between the two options in terms of price, performance and the future. To dismiss the AGP version out of hand seems a little black and white about it.

Yup, your gona need a DX10 card for Vista, so how much is a DX10 card gona be, exactly, and by the time there is some DX10 stuff out there, games etc... which are not going to appear overnight and flood out, will take donks, your gona have to spend again for the latest card to run em. :)
You don't need a DX10 card for Vista....

It wont in benchmarks, but who gives a hoot about those, you can't play 3D marks, x1800's are faster at gaming, thats where it matters, the higher the 3D mark score does not mean your card is the faster at gaming, it isn't. :)

The fact is You can get a 512mb 7900 GT that will clock to 7900 GTX speeds and a pci-e mobo cheaper than getting a 24pipe 7800 gs.

FACT.

This is reason enough to dismiss the AGP version outright IMO.

FACT: You cant spec me a board that is suitable for an upgrade.

FACT: To get a PCI-e board that is suitable i will need to go to 775

FACT: I will then need a new CPU, RAM and Graphics as well

FACT: The AGP option will be CHEAPER.

You can? which? How much cheaper? Does it include the slient Arctic cooler? specifics please...!! Can the 7800gs+ not do the same? It's the same GPU and looks like it's actually the same 1.2ns memory

Constantly saying FACT in big letters does not always make it so you know ;)

I'm going to win the lottery tonight - FACT.

Saving maybe £20 and having to faff around changing motherboards to end up with the same performance does not sound like a MASSIVE advantage to me.

FACT

:D :D

Changing to a PCI-e motherboard and GPU is a valid option, so is getting a AGP 7900GT 512mb. Both ways end up with more or less the same performace at about the same price. There's not compelling reason either way except for a lot of people the AGP upgrade is a much simpler, quicker and easier option.

I'm just having a bit of fun in this thread with someone who obviously feels the need to justify thier own PCI-e purchase - FACT :D

I can spec you a mobo but I'm busy they do exist so do a search.
Dont dismiss what I'm saying. You know I am right.

I can't believe this is still going on.

FAO tmileson: I am going to lay out some facts for you. Upgrading to PCI-E is hassle-free and cheaper, it also gives you a much wider range of graphics cards to look at. On AGP you would be stuck with the 7800GS+ but with PCI-E you get dozens of cards at any one time, each with their own distinct pro's and con's, that can truely suit your needs. Did I mention that it's cheaper too?

You know that what we are saying is right, and we're not saying it for the sake of argument, as we on this forum genuinely like to help people out and above all help them to get the most for their money. Recommending someone stick with AGP when PCI-E conversion is just so cheap right now would be inconsiderate at best.

We are not "justifying our purchases", we don't need to. Easyrider and I both have amazing rigs by most standards, and I don't know how much he paid for his but mine was cheap as dirt. You could too, if you could just get over this complex and realise we're trying to help you.

was waiting until the insults would start to imerge.
I am not justifying anything. And certainly not my pci-e purchase.

Your arguement is full of flaws and you know it.Your defending old technology because you cant be bothered to change a mobo.

This is not a valid enough reason.

Do the sums. Its all there for you.
I could spoon feed you but sadly i'm not biting to your wind up statements.

go ahead get the 7800 GS on agp.And have no upgrade path.I dont care.Spend more money and have lower performance.I don't care.

justify your own AGP purchase.I dont care.

The smart option is staring you in the face. But you just choose to ignore it. :p

Quoted for truth ;) :D

hi guys !

I currently have p4 2.66 + 512MB + unknown motherboard + MX440 (-_-!) and I am thinking about an upgrade of GFX card. Would you guys recommend me an AGP card around £100?

Cheers :)

i didn't insult anyone!?!? I was having a bit of fun.. You taking things too seriously?

Your arguement is full of flaws and you know it.Your defending old technology because you cant be bothered to change a mobo.
not at all, what's the flaw? My AGP 7900GT based system is as fast as the PCI-e version (give or take) and I didn't have to faff around changing motherboards. It costs about the same. Sorry, I don't see the flaw.

Do the sums. Its all there for you.
I have done, everytime i do the sums and quote comparissons for the same kit it get ignored. Unsubstantiated claims of "it's "£100 cheaper" or doing comparissons that come out £40 cheap for a card thats not the same (i.e. 256mb 1.4ns GT vs 512mb 1.2ns GT) doesn't really help your argument stand up.

I could spoon feed you but sadly i'm not biting to your wind up statements.
No wind up statements here, you just invent figures to "win" an argument and expect everyone to believe them without any facts. The same with Gav and his motherboard. When challenged to substantite your point all of a sudden you "don't have the time" ;)

go ahead get the 7800 GS on agp.And have no upgrade path.I dont care.Spend more money and have lower performance.I don't care.
I have the same upgrade path as you - 2 years time we will both be on different video cards and motherboards.

oooh thanks... I really don't understand all this complicated technology stuff...

Upgrading to PCI-E is hassle-free and cheaper
No tis' not. Having to change your motherboard and for some people processor and memeory as well is hardly "hassle free". As we've seen when we stop comparing different things and actual use a like for like comparisson not only is it nor cheaper but in one case more expensive.

it also gives you a much wider range of graphics cards to look at. On AGP you would be stuck with the 7800GS+ but with PCI-E you get dozens of cards at any one time, each with their own distinct pro's and con's, that can truely suit your needs.
don't see how that's an advantage, i would have bought the same 7900gt even if I had PCI-e. Granted some people would want a x1900, SLi or similar in which case as I've already said you then need to go for PCI-e

Did I mention that it's cheaper too?
you did, although as we've seen when you do a like for like comparisson you're wrong. Keep saying the same thing doesn't make it true, and to quote a phrase ... FACT ;)

You know that what we are saying is right, and we're not saying it for the sake of argument, as we on this forum genuinely like to help people out and above all help them to get the most for their money. Actually I don't agree... Blindly advising people to go for a PCI-e motherboard that will be obsolete in 2 months is hardly helpfull. Get the best out of the kit you have now and do a major upgrade in a 12/18months time to AM2/DX10 would be a lot more helpful.

We are not "justifying our purchases", we don't need to. Easyrider and I both have amazing rigs by most standards, and I don't know how much he paid for his but mine was cheap as dirt. You could too, if you could just get over this complex and realise we're trying to help you.
Even if you do say so yourselves. So, please explain to me, why is your rig so much better than my AGP X2 3800 running at 2.5g with 2gb of Cas2 & 512mb 7900GT? What does it do that mine doesn't to show how much better PCI-e is? If I had the same rig but changed it to PCI-e would it play games/ do anything any better?
