Best language to learn

Sheer population :p wherever you go, its pretty likely you'l find indians who speak hindi. I've found that no matter which country i've been to.

110% true, you also capture the pakistani population, which are pretty much in every country.

BUT most indians also understand and speak reasonable english.

Official languages of the European Union :

| Czech
| Danish
| Dutch
| English
| Estonian
| Finnish
| French
| German
| Greek
| Hungarian
| Irish
| Italian
| Latvian
| Lithuanian
| Maltese
| Polish
| Portuguese
| Slovak
| Slovenian
| Spanish
| Swedish

I'm leaning Spanish and it's really easy.

If you're going ot have that many official languages why bother to have official languages at all?

It gives each European citizen a right to commincate to the EU in their country's official langauge. Not everyone speaks English.

Haha Latin indeed! Come on guys dont be ridiculous! (THE dullest language - learn it only if you have plently of spare time and indeed no life)

Spanish without doubt would be the best bet - its widely spoken (2nd most widely spoken language) Its close to Portugese and Italian so branching out to those ot languages is an easier task. Spanish is easy. Lastly the girls are hot!

Chinese would be an option however its very difficult to pick up so more likely that you will give up/not learn much.

French - well its a nice language not too hard and they are our neighbours, but really where will get get you apart from France, Quebec and North Africa?

Just my 1p:)

It's the second most spoken where? What is the source for your assertion?

Who's got your knickers in a twist!?? The 2nd most widely spoken language - well I thought it was common knowledge. (Thats not the most spoken but the most number of countries spoken in).

They're thoroughly untwisted. It's just that earlier in this thread it was established that Spanish is not the second most spoken language in the world based on number of people who have it as a native tongue. Chinese/Mandarin is first followed by English as second. Source:

I was just looking for perhaps a different measurement that the one quoted above. It's all good. :)

hmm I am suprised that Mandarin is the widest spoken actually - it seems that popluation numbers count in that survey, it isnt very clear how that is worked out. I can remember from somwhere that English was the widest followed by Spanish, I think it was in the Guiness book of records 1995:p However thats not much help I know.

It really does entirely depend on the thread starter and his life...if hes likely to move to columbia and become a cocaine mule then spanish would be good...

Cant recommend much without life detail.s

Id love to learn Japanese, I really want to go there at some point because I think the country is just fantastic, and the girls are pretty :)

I met a girl from Estonia the other day - awesome language... sounds like elvish and crosses over with Finnish.

I think if I was going to learn another one, it'd probably be a north european one.
