Best Retro Handheld

Does the Anbernic RG cube have an Amiga Emulator on it or will I have to add it myself?
Yep, im using PUAE2021 but expect standalones like Amiberry Android will work too.

Managed to setup daijisho on my R4P. The Android setup was much easier than I thought in the end.
Retroarch was too much hassle to configure. I guess I was spoilt by using the various Linux OSes on my RG35xx H that all had retorarch reconfigured. Probably gonna flog the Anbernic now.

Currently setup for SNES, PS1, PSP & PS2 on the Retroid, and it was quite quick setting up those 4 emulators. I'm quite new to the PS2 emulation, so was wondering what version of Aether/NetherSX people are using, for best compatibility? I think I have the latest version of NetherSX, but I found so much conflicting info on what version to use, I just used the latest, which may not be the best.

Been looking at the

ANBERNIC RG 40XXV

Looking really to play up to PS1 and I prefer the vertical form factor, would this one be the best one to go for?

Also for anyone that owns one does it come preloaded with Emulators and then you have to manually add the roms?

They work out of the box and comes with games. However, they won't come with Mario or a some Nintendo games because of lawyers.

Its running Linux and the same power as my RG35XX H, which ran portmaster really well. Games like Half life 2 and Doom 3 run great so not sure why it only has one analog.
Probably because its aimed at upto N64 and Dreamcast which only had one analog (I think)

Caved and ordered a Retroid pocket mini in black. 4:3 powerhouse for Saturn, PS2 and Gamecube (maybe some Win9x games too)

Are you not finding the Cube good enough for those systems?

How are you finding the Cube overall, any regrets?
It's very good for those systems but not perfect. A few games need tweaking to get max fps and having a 1:1 screen instead of 4:3 means scretching or black bars.

The dpad and buttons are great.

Sticks are not great (but usable)

Gameboy, Pico 8 and 3DS on the screen are fantastic but I dont play too much of those systems.

Mini is 4:3, OLED screen, better sticks, a bit more performance (but 2GB less RAM) and most importantly will have better community support for help/general support and software. I hear Batorcera team are already including it in their mainline update.

Thanks for that, I'm torn on the Mini vs the Cube.

4:3 OLED ticks a lot of boxes, but I had an RGB30 which was cheap and flawed but SNES in particular was great with overscan enabled on the 1:1.

I'm not really a fan of Anbernic and their software is usually jank. But saving £80+ versus the Mini isn't insignificant. Plus once I stick a front end on Android I won't have to worry about it.

Still not sure what benefit a glass front is other than a fingerprint magnet? And I can't fathom why they put a 5 year old version of Android on it. There are emulators which won't work on anything under Android 11.

Heard in some hands-on/reviews that the sd cover doesn't close flush and the buttons scrape the glass. Retroid seem to have form for issues like this though with the launch of a new device.

Hope it is just the early review models impacted. Look forward to seeing what you think of it though.

Positives and negatives of each I guess.

I’ll probably wait until Android 13 is released before updating everything on the mini when it arrives in ~ 2-3 weeks.

Buttons will be my main gripe of the mini I expect. Buttons and doad on the Cube are excellent.

Tfcard slot cover, just remove it? There isnt one on the Cube and it works fine.

Edit - reading some views on Android 13 (on the mini), it seems best sticking with Android 10 as 13 chews up battery and 1GB additional RAM.

So I often get stuck at airports, and wouldnt mind something small I can mess about with. This has led me to the RG40XXH, I don't fancy spending a fortune but wouldn't mind the ability for some dreamcast/N64 games. Is there anything else I should consider?

Edit - Bought one, seems a good mix between portability and price.
