Best Retro Handheld

A job for later i think, it's amazing how fast it fills up 256g when added PS1, GC and PS2 games. I only have around 25 PS2 games, no Wii or WiiU. Which I doubt i will bother due to the lack of nunchucks.

I would like to try to emulate Switch, playing Breath of the Wild on it would be fun...I do own that game.

It appears I can get a 512 2230 nvme for less than £50, only a tiny bit more than a 512 micro SD card anyway.

Sort out WiiU for BOTW, it’ll be a better experience.

One problem overcome but another pops up...this is why I prefer Linux devices lol

Now i got this when trying to scrape box arts. I have no idea.....anyone?

While you solved this issue, you can avoid a lot of the android problems by installing Batocera or ROCKNIX on it. Android is a very poor choice of OS for retro emulation and should only be kept on the device if you play android games.

Hopefully KNULLI will be sorted one day, but the Linux support is one of the reasons retroid stuck with a lower power and less efficient SoC.

Aside from the potential benefits (very much a YMMV thing!) of android native stuff (if you want to consume native android apps / use it as a makeshift tablet), I'd be more tempted to give it a go if it hadn't seen "temper your expectations" about batocera etc. everywhere for the retroid pocket 5! If there is performance and feature parity, I'd definitely be tempted to give it a go (especially given pretty much every other device I've got is a dedicated OS). Definitely a fair bit of initial 'clunk' to getting the android to play nice with it all.

/edit especially for PS2 and gamecube emulation which was one of the main drivers behind getting a more powerful machine!

I went in eyes open knowing how time consuming it is vs Linux. I have the Retroid Pocket Flip so I have been through this before. However that time I never installed any PS2 games.

For a more powerful device and a much nicer screen on the RP5, it’s a shame for it to be 100% gaming machine. It makes a nice 2nd media consuming device at hotels if that’s the only other thing I have with me plus my phone. It’s basically a tablet with a controller.

It doesn’t get away from the fact that it is a PITA to set up.

So long as it is only a PITA to setup, not to maintain...that is yet to be seen!

Whilst everyone is setting up their new Android devices, I have a Retroarch issue.

Trying to setup Opera(3DO) core, and it is nowhere to be found in core dowloader.

Tried updating cores etc, any ideas?

I've just checked on mine and its listed as The 3DO Company - 3DO (Opera). How are you searching for it? Text filter or just scrolling?

Just ordered a 512G M.2 2230 SSD with enclosure that sticks to the bottom of the unit. Let's figure out how it works later on. Good thing the USB port is dead center and my hands won't be in the way.
I went for the SD card as I found a decent one on spec offer for about £30 but I can imagine the reads being better on an OTG SSD!

Well, I could go for a larger SD card, but my logic is

1 - a 512 SD card is like £40. Total cost for this DIY job is also £40.
2 - I can use it for other things if it turns out I won't be using it for gaming
3 - I can't handle redoing all that set up again! I can handle making a folder call ROMs then copying files to that (which will be fast), and just point the emulator to the external folder.

I will probably use it for switch games when i figure out how...

I also bought a 1080p capture card for £10...to connect my camera to the computer...will see how that goes lol
