Yeah quite impressed. It could have a little more weight to it but that’s personal preference.Smart looking device for the money.
TrimUI Brick for Linus OS at £50 for the vertical
Retroid Pocket 5 for Android OS at £220 for horizontal
What’s the best Chinese handheld for retro games lately folks? The market seems to move so fast!
TrimUI brick still, Perhaps the Anbernic RG40XXV if you want a stick and larger screen for the PS1 and N64 games.
TrimUI Brick is much more pocketable.
I did look at the RG40 but the higher res screen on the brick sold it. I can see a pocket 5 being purchased in the not too distant future too.
Is the brick reasonably straight forward to set up? I've bought it without card, not played with a handheld before but built plenty of retropie setups and currently run batocera on an elite desk.
I bought without a card too and I put MinUI on, and I just followed Retro Games Corp's YouTube video to the letter. Takes a couple of hours including copying files. I seen like 30mins of that trying to change the boot up logo from MinUI to say Nintendo though lol. I had to keep trying different resolution and compression before it worked.

Having recently started dipping my toes into the whole retro console thing , with a clone R36S, I got the R36H (hopefully non cloned locked down version) on the way from Aliexpress and I have seen the Miyoo Flip that I fancy getting as well. Any one else got one ? Also it seems that I have missed the boat on getting the 1st batch as they are pretty much sold out everywhere.
After doing some more research and watching YouTube vids. I have purchased a TrimUI Brick as well. Looking forward to that as well. I did look at the Retroid Pocket 4 / 4 Pro but ultimately it’s a bit too much for me at this stage as I’m pretty novice at the moment. Hopefully the R36H and the Brick will scratch my itch for a few weeks. No doubt I will pick up some more when I’m over in HK next month, where there will be abundance of them no doubt.I haven't seen anyone here who has one and only a limited number of people even on reddit who has one. I think they are reviewing well-ish but not sure I will get it (I have the Anbernic SP), as I find myself liking the TrimUI Brick the most out of all the small Gameboy style handhelds. The screen on the TrimUI is also the best of the lot and also like £25 less.
The clamp shell factor whilst convenient, as I have a screen protector on, it level the playing field somewhat.

Don't forget that Android is probably the least desirable OS for a focused emulation experience.Sadly, the website has backed up the conclusion I've made from a number of other sources which is that I should buy the retroid pocket 5 despite the big pile of other emulation devices that I have here!

It sits at that useless intersection between the great retroarch focused Linux devices (e.g. RG35XX) and the windows/Steam OS devices.
It's not pocketable like the RG35XX and it's extremely fragile with very bad ergonomics for dual stick use, so you need a case and grips for it to be usable for more modern platforms. This brings you closer to the inconvenience of a Windows/Steam OS device.
It's also far less compatible and performant than a Windows/Steam OS device. You have annoying issues such as needing to use janky graphics drivers to play Vita or Switch games, poor emulator updates and support, and emulating windows for game pass or steam gaming is very poor. The app landscape for emulation on Android is very underdeveloped and janky.
I'm very disappointed with my RP5, and I highly recommend getting either a device that runs KNULLI where everything is fully setup for you, or a device that supports Emudeck where all systems just work and everything is easy to manage and keep up to date. Don't get the middle ground compromise.
Hopefully the Linux support for the RP5 keeps developing so that we can get away from the Android experience. The current state is clearly in beta.
Any links to a guide on setting up MinUI that you recommend for simpletons like me ? Is the stock UI that comes with the Brick not great or serviceable ? Also is there specific Micro SD brand that I need for it or is it not as fussy as other consoles ?FYI, I am STILL setting up my RP5 lol I played for a bit in the middle f the week but back to tinker a bit more. It's like option paralysis overwhelming scale problem issue lol. I keep seeing people doing things on it that I want to try, like widescreen SNES games mods or HD packs for GC games.
TrimUI Brick with MinUI, done in about 2hrs, finished and start playing games.
Yeah the more I read into about the Flip the less I want to get it. Yes I have read about the hinge issues and also the finish on certain colours. Also the UI isn’t quite there either. I’m more excited about the Brick tbh.Don't forget that Android is probably the least desirable OS for a focused emulation experience.

Don't get the flip. A new version is coming soon with fixed metal hinges and the software is horrendous, so wait to see if the big alternatives such as KNULLI will be supported if you really want the analog sticks. If not then get the RG35XXSP for half the price (45 instead of 80 USD).

I like the look of vertical devices and I think they appeal to me due to having grown up with the original Gameboy, but I find horizontal much more comfortable.Just gotten an R36H delivered and I have just ordered the Smart Pro as well. Deffo the H format of the R36 is more suitable for my aging old hands. Deffo prefer it to the R36S version.
