Best Retro Handheld

With my PSP disks all falling apart I am looking for a PSP handheld that is vita sized, is 16:9 and is powerful enough for 2x psp resolution which is think is roughly 720p. And it can't be the Anbernic 405m 16:9 equivalent as I have that one so I would like something different lol

I'm definitely enjoying my 405M though, I've basically completed GT2 on it now

Odin 2 Portal will play it.

But the RP5 will as well. I've not tested it though.

Odin 2 mini is pretty much a PS Vita. But it can to PSP at probably 8x or more.

Or something slightly smaller and cheaper with less power, the Retroid Pocket 5.

And another one for my collection .... The TrimUI Brick.

Just love these things at the moment.

Oooh I might have a look at that. I don’t mind the stock ones you get on Crossmix , Epic Noir and I have installed MinUI on my Brick. I need to decide which one to take with me on my long haul flight next week.

I can be indecisive at the best of times, so currently looking for a retro handheld console is option overload!

I'd like to go up to PS2 era but that looks like i'd end up having yo go over budget (max £100, ideally £50).

I've sort of arrived at the RG40XXV. Where is the best place to get this in the UK? The cheapest I can find is via the TikTok shop, but i've never used that and it seems kind of sketchy.

I rather get it from Aliexpress than Tiktok shop. It's going to be about £60, it won't do PS2 though...you really need an Andriod device for that and that's going to be another £100.

Thanks, the TrimUI Brick looks nice too.

Anyone with both the RG40XXV and TrimUI Brick have any comments?

Is the stick on the RG40XXV beneficial or does it just get in the way most of the time when not needed?

I have both.

The TrimUI is a better built machine, better quality plastic, better screen, it looks sharper due to higher pixels and smaller screen. It’s more pocketable too.

The V wins on 2 front. It is much more comfortable, it is a larger screen, so it is nicer in that regard and you soon forget it’s less sharp. The stick does help with N64 games like Mario 64. The stick does not get in the way.

I carry the TrumUi brick in my bag because it’s so small. The V I leave at home.

Got an R36S for £20 from China and its awesome! What a fun little device.

Hooked it up to ethernet via my Steamdeck dock and it fully updated itself like magic.

Turns out I'm not really getting on with the pocket 5!

I find I quite uncomfortable to hold when I want to use the triggers. And especially triggers plus analogue sticks. The analogue stick is in the wrong place on a fairly powerful 16.9 device, I'm having to squeeze the device quite hard with my left hand and my thumb is at an odd angle. The steam deck is much more comfortable for this even though I really like that the RP5 is a lot smaller. I think it would have been more comfortable with smaller digital L2R2 buttons. Although that affects streaming modern games.

The Dpad and face button games feel good but I'll use a 4:3 device for that. The buttons themselves all feel cheaper than my $60 RGXX35H.

The sound quality is awful, it has "no treble" or the higher frequencies in a equaliser/mixer buried somewhere have been turned down drastically. Both speakers sound the same.

The out of the box experience was a bit lacking with a few tutorials running at the same time (which makes the screen dim for everything outside of the tutorial box including the other tutorial boxes) and running retroid launcher didn't seem to work. So now I'm launching my games from normal android which is fine.

The analogue stick position is what has stopped me from buying a RP5.

Some people have 3D printed grips that double as screen covers that help with the comfort.

I looked at upgrading to the 5 from my Pocket 3+ but found lot of people saying the same thing. My hands are pretty big so think I would struggle with it. I still using my 3+ but quickly get fed up with the sticks - they are not very 'smooth' when compared to something like a xbox controller.
