Best XMBC Box

I will be buying a Minix X8-H soon. I have had a lot of media pcs and still have a couple but they all tend to be overkill. The Minix X8-H is very compact, will play 4K (I only have 1080p though) it is android based, has Kodi built in, it is very power efficient. I have seen them play uncompressed 1080p BR Rip with no issues at all. For just over £100 its well worth the money and as its android based I can easily install MAME, Snes9x etc and have all my old time favs on my big tv.. However shonky they look :D

***The NEO X8-H only supports standard definition Netflix. Netflix 1080p HD is not available on any MINIX NEO Series devices.

Weird? whys this? :)

That QNAP is interesting, they're known for their NAS but this seems like a node server for accessing content on the local network and using PLEX as the media browser.

Not sure if that would be worth a purchase if you already own a NAS. Isn't it better to use an Android box running Kodi for local and online content?

xvmc just runs as a qts app in hd station. Ive tried a fair few different players and so far this is the best.

I run the MQ5 skin, that is to much for a lot of the android boxes, My movie collection is massive, and again no issues.

The inbuilt torrent client, with a little help from filebot and rss feeds, makes everything seamless.

If you already have a nas maybe not the best way to go but if not its worth looking at.

That actually sounds fantastic! Are you able to add channels to that qts version of XBMC?

Funny, I also run the Aeon MQ5 skin and find it to look like a beautifully professional media interface that you'd normally expect to pay hundreds of pounds for such excellence.

i run raspbmc on a raspberry pi - works a treat for me

Openelec is very good too on the pi or other devices for that matter. Like another poster says, Celeron NUC is a great box for it. Advantages over the pi is that it has IR built-in and it's more powerful should you want to repurpose it later on...plus can always run windows if you want.

+1 for the Celeron NUC.
It plays Blu Ray ISOs flawlessly

Did anyone consider using the Hummingbird i1? It's the exact same as a Raspberry Pi (features and size) only with 300MHz extra CPU power and costs a fraction more but runs Android.

Thanks for everyone's help. I ended up getting the Raspberry Pi.

Haha, you've told us three times now. I think everyone is just discussing what other devices work well as an XBMC box.

ubox r89 can be had for under £70 and a modded version of xbmc, called spmc is very good.
I got both the ouya and ubox, and the ubox is a better device.

I have been amazed at how well the Fire TV performs when running Kodi. It has been superb, bought it whilst on offer last Friday.
With DD and DTS optical pass through it would seem to be as responsive as my comparatively humongous HTPC.
I am even getting used to the remote control, only having used a MCE type previously. It did seem a little short on functionality but between that and my wireless keyboard it seems that my needs are met.
I never thought that I would be praising an Android type box with, seemingly, such lowly specs compared to the traditional PC I have used.
In the past I had bought, and then sold, a Pi and even though that ran what I needed it was too slow within the menus etc for my enjoyment.

Yes it is exceptional for the money with Kodi. I just hope they sort out the DD over HDMI issue so I don't have to go and dig out my optical cable.

I had read something of that before but as my Logitech Z5500 can't accept an HDMI input it didn't matter to me as I was using a S/PDIF connection already.
When looking at these smaller boxes I was surprised at how few of them have a S/PDIF connection available.

I am using Kodi 14.1 (RC) which I sideloaded. I hope that when 14.1 final is released I could upgrade that by sideloading it over (?) and thus retain all its settings etc.

It works like that in windows but not sure it does in droid. ADBFire has options for backing up the settings folder.
