BFG 8800GT OC2 constantly locksup and artifacts after 5-10 min of play

I read somewhere that this is a common problem with BFG 8800GTs but NOT a hardware error. They simply have a sticker which blocks the cooling mechanism and causes these faults. Check your card, remove the sticker and hopefully problem solved! :)

i had heard some stickers cover the fan which i checked and mine is clear

the core and shaders are fine at OC2 clock it is the memory letting it down

My OC2 has been fine so far. Only little niggles i've noticed is that it sometimes seems to freeze for a moment when playing a game, maybe for only 5-10 seconds, then off it goes again and nothing bad happens later. Niggle in playing STALKER as well, but i think that's just the game (and i think that noprefetch thing fixed it).

When i first ran it without tinkering with the fan options, in UT3 it used to freeze a lot, then crash everything. After i turned the fan up to 100% it hasn't done that since.

To be honest, after having an overheating X1800, i'm used to niggles.

I really wish you to have this settled well Woozy... I mean first you got robbed in ebay when you sold your graphics card, then the evga you ordered never arrived so you changed to bfg oc2, then the bfg got shipped to the wrong address... and now this... :( Sooo terribly unlucky!

I seriously hope that yours was a rare case. I don't want to suggest anything really, but perhaps your BFG card having been rma'd will ensure you get a good double-checked one the next time? All I can say is that I can't complain for my OC2. After all I've been reading on these GT's, I had been having nightmares of all the problems occuring to me - I read about guys having their computer not POST (just beeps no loading windows) others like you having crashes as soon as they start a 3D application, others having cooling problems... I didn't even check if my GT fan was adequate, before I ran 3dmark06 I adjusted rivatuner to up the fan to 65% as soon as the core temp reaches 75, and to 90% (aka squeal!) when core temp reaches 85 degrees. I discovered that during normal 2D operation the fan remains inaudible. It goes to 65% only when I'm playing 3D games like Oblivion and Crysis. And then I have to lower my sound to check that the fan is in fact whirring at 65% otherwise I don't hear it. The gpu never reached 85 degrees... which was a surprise for me since my 8600GTS used to reach 87 degrees during Oblivion quite regularly... I checked and the maximum it ever reached, after 5 (yes five) continuous hours of gameplay, was 81 degrees which for me is quite acceptable.

I tend however to think that due to the high demand for the GT's the factories hurried things up and probably let pass cards which shouldn't have made it... :(

plus the training company i was studying ccna and mcsc with went bust and took my money this year

thanks for your kind words i have fealt very alone and jinx of late :( and all of it has been the fault of others who get away with it

i often feel you have to be an a**hole in this world to get good in life and i do not do being an a**hole

edit: as for RMA'ing it i think i will hang onto it untill OCUK have more in stock i need to ask them if i can swap it for a zotac if possible while in my 28days policy

BFG telephone support are not worth the hassle they were rubbish

woozy2k7, you may find this interesting, it seems you're not alone:

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=447845

according to a post there that original poster was banned from the computer hardware forum (hardforum) for lies about BFG

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1238771

but the BFGs do seem to have the most cases of issues. I do not get BSODs but lockups and artifacting unless the memory is unclocked by 75

I will be RMA'ing it when OcUK eventually have more in as i already waited a month to get this and do not want to wait more than a week for a replacement

just got it a week ago and playing COD4 tonight the screen went all stripey,I rebooted and it was ok, then later playing again after a bit it went mauve .just tried the nvidia stress test on the card, the temp remained around 61 but the test keeps locking the pc up after about a min.it says runtime error

i may keep it and get a cooler like the thermaltake GT and hope for the best with the memory

as OcUK RMA will be faffing around more than a week im sure with the card if I send it

would there be any noticable difference between 1800Mhz memory and 1950Mhz OC2 memory?

just had this from BFG tec support
Let's check the size of your power supply. The federal government mandatesthat all manufacturers attach a sticker to the power supply with all pertinentinformation needed. Sometimes it will be necessary to remove the power supplyfrom the case to see this label. This label will contain two main features, the maximum wattage output and theamount of amperage that can be supported by the +12 volt rail. Your powersupply may have two or even three +12V rails. In this case, you would add thenumbers together to find out the maximum amperage supported. Amperage will berepresented by the letter "A". We will need to know how many amps that thepower supply can handle on the +12V rail and how many rails your power supply has. We will also need to observe what the voltages are running at in real time. There are two ways to perform this. You could go into the BIOS of yourmotherboard and under the advanced chipset tab, there may be an option forvoltage monitor. This will show you what the 1.5V, 3.3V, 5V, and the 12V railsare operating at. We will need to know all four. If your motherboard does nothave this feature, you will need to download PC Wizard 2007 to tell what therails are at. This is a free download and a link to the webpage will beprovided at the end of this e-mail. This will provide the exact sameinformation that the motherboard will give. After installing the program, click on the icon in the lower right hand corner and this will provide us withwhat the rails are at. Again, we will need to know all four rail voltages. well i certianly know it isnt my psu as i ran a 8800 GTS 640 OC2 before the GT

it is deff the memory on my GT that had not been tested by the dopes that test the cards stability

woozy, I dont think you will be happy until you have got what you paid for, I know I wouldnt, so my advice is rma, looks like a few people are having problems with BFG, why dont you phone OC, explain, tell em you are not happy and want a different make.

Well my Asus is working fine so far without prob, but it doesn't sound good though, sounds like we got another 7900 GT on our hands here, im expecting mine to die at some point now, hope i get my new GTS before that time comes. :p
