all because nvidia used a idiotic cooler
It's your decision.
However please do check first if cooling is a problem.
Take off the side of your pc, aim a house fan full blast inside your pc. Try some 3D games (still with side of pc removed and house fan blowing inside). If it doesn't lock up then it's a cooling issue. But if it still locks up you'd be risking buying stuff for nothing and remaining with a faulty card...

hmm if i do rma it do u think OCUK would let me change it for a GTS G92
I don't see any reason why they shouldn't, but it's better to contact them first. Apart from the fact that you'd be getting the GTS G92 much much later than the replacement for your GT....... Btw the new GT's are going to be offered with a larger fan, and it would be a plus if you get one of these!
Off topic but lol has anyone noticed on the top right it's advertised the 8800GT at 124.99 + VAT... there's no such card with that price, even though the 256MB ones are cheaper...
Just my personal opinion (because you say you're confused), I'd rma it. Otherwise you'd always have the nagging fact that your card is defective and you'd be unhappy. After all you paid extra for a card to have the memory clocked with warranty to 1950. That's why I bought my OC2 and not just any stock card, so that I don't try to overclock it and likely be unsuccessful.
Have you tried the fan thing yet?
About the long waiting for rma, I don't know how the procedures with OcUK are but maybe you can call them and for example ask that you buy a zotac or another oc'd card, and then when the rma process is complete you get a refund?
Currently I have my monitor on rma with a local maltese supplier - they gave me another 19" LCD for temporary use until I get the replacement. This is only fair, because after all the issues leading to rma aren't the consumer's fault but the fault of the factory. Call OcUK and ask them whether something similar is possible - it's not fair either that you lose use of your pc through something which isn't your fault. On the other hand, if it isn't their policy to do so... but it won't hurt to call and try to arrive at a solution.
About the possibility of the second card being even worse, I'd personally exclude it. I mean, for heavens sake you've been unlucky enough... and secondly I've been reading a lot on these GT's - mostly the problems they suffer are either-
1) heating; or
2) memory issues like yours; or
3) motherboard bios incompatibility issues
If you get one which heats up (which is very unlikely if you run the fan at 65% during 3D games like Crysis) you can always buy the Accelero S1 or something similar.
You won't be getting motherboard issues, because your mobo accepted the card - if not your computer wouldn't post (black screen & no windows).
Since your card would be rma'd for memory issues it's very likely that they'd be testing the correct function of the memory so you'd be getting a good one. Unfortunately memory problems were very common with the GT - very rarely has it been possible for people to overclock the memory at 2000 let alone beyond, though such users exist. Personally I haven't tried because I don't think there's that much difference in game performance between 1950 and 2000. Also, I've read a lot of posts, in other forums as well, of people managing to OC their core to over 700 and OC the shaders as well, but it is always the memory which is the most difficult to OC.
Apparently in the hurry, OC'd cards weren't being tested for long enough to ensure stability...
well well
did what you suggested, stuck small desk fan blowing onto the card and sent the memory to 1960Mhz and it didnt lockup or artifact
so it should be fine without the deskfan when i put the thermalright GT cooler and 92mm fan on
seen further pre-order prices today @ a competitor price which i can't mention.
Mark.
Hi all
I have had the BFG 8800 GT OC2 for a week now and haven't realy had a chance too test it untill today..
Well I have had no BSOD's but lock ups on both the Ntune stress test and 3D Mark06..
I see there is another thread about the wrong Bios version causing some problems.
Is this related ?
My bios is 62.92.16.00.31 which in that thread is wrong should be .21 ??
Is this right ?
So I guess I should just RMA the card..
