I picked up a new bike for XC recently, a Giant Trance Zero:

It's been a really nice ride so far. The tyres aren't great though, planning on switching then out for some Panaracer Fire XC Tubeless.

Hey, fellow Trance owner ! :D I have a Trance too, albeit a Trance 3, and not a Zero. :)

I have some more questions about bike technical bits n all that :p
what is a stem lock device and does it replace the star fangled nut?
how hard is it to replace a headset
when you get new forks do you have to put a crown race thing on them and how hard is it

cheers

Nexus - does the Trance still come with Hutchinsons? Bulldogs IIRC? My Trance 2 came with them and they are hung up in the garage, still factory fresh!

Replacing a headset isn't that hard, though it's easier with a proper headset press than a block of wood and lump hammer. You can either make your press for sub £10 with B&Q bits or £35 for a Park one. You can get a proper tool for removing the old cups or use an old flat headed screwdriver and hammer. You need to make sure you can get all the bearings, spacers and seals in the right order.

New forks won't have a crown race - it's dead easy if your headset has a split crown race.

cheers
what is a split crown race?
does the FSA pig headset have one?

Don't think so. Event though the FSA XLII says it comes with a split CR, 90% of peeps get a full one. Pop it to the LBS, they should remove it for free, or get them to do all the work, the headset is one of the few things that I think really should be done by someone in the know with the right tools.

Righto, im gonna use this thread for this question...as its pointless opening a new thread.

Looking for a bike..Hardtail, price range around 500-600...the catch is, whatever company/website, they Must! do either Buy Now - Pay later, or interest free credit options. I did do a thread weeks ago, and was suggested a Rockhopper...most websites were out of stock :(...only have 3 LBS..and 2 of them are Giant Dealers, but neither do, buy now, paylater, or interest free credit options..

Basically, looking for something that will take a good beating every weekend, good comfort levels, Hydro Discs, decent components if possible.

Lets see what you guys can suggest me...i hope people read what i need...the credit options are Very important. Oh im 5ft11, medium build also.

another question:
how hard is it to set up a chain guide for dual or single rings on the front for the correct chain line?
I would be getting one that jams either the mount adapter or the boomerang in the bottom bracket

+ will i need another BB

cheers
Collisster

+ I wish johnny//m wasn't suspended so he could help me. anyone know what he has done?

Maybe a Trek 6000 from sunset (they do finance)

Although the Kona Caldera has quality components for just £650.

Not done it myself, but these gubbins apparantly do all the work for you. Can't see why you'd need a new BB though.

Very good, i like the look of the Kona, but i dont know much about them, not a make thats mentioned much around here....
On the other hand, what does everyone think of the Specialized FSR XC 2007....i know its a Full Susser, but, surley Specialized dont make crappy ones at this level

Actually after some reading about the Specialized FSR XC 2007...im not sure i want that, the Hayes sole, brakes dont get much in the way of positive views, ...looks like a Kona as suggested, or a Rockhopper.

Someone with a grudge signed up as him on an anti-ocuk site that he never knew about, jonny tried to login here and found out he was banned this morn.

Emailed a don and no reply, he had proof that it wasn't him either

[email protected] is his msn, says to add him if you want help with your Q.

Full suspension bikes don't really get decent until you spend £1000 upwards.
The Specialized FSR XC Comp is one step up from the basic FSR XC and comes good kit as standard but it costs £1100 (£900 in the current sales)

i didnt like the XC comp, it just felt odd (ive always had specialised). I ended up with a Marin East Peak, which much more suited my style and riding position.

But yes ideally you need to spend 1k+ on a full susser.
