My halfords xc2.6 is a pain to ride now!, after my chain guard broke off, 2nd day of riding, and gears are totally out of alignment. Johnny, do you think halfords can do anything for me?, ie, new chain guard or something?

For you sir.

Just get on msn now :p

Does no one mountian bike with ridged frames anymore. Plus V brackes, everyone seems to be using discs.

I love my ridged Maxlight and XT V's!!

(obviosly got front sus)

Quite a few of the guys I ride with own rigid single speeds, though discs are popular for giving you the ability to stop in the Clywds or Peaks clag (aka mud).

How mountainy are you talking for rigid frames?

I use a GT Avalanche, and am going to eventually change it from mechanical discs, to rear V brake and front hope mono mini(or deore hydro disc if funds restrict it).

Not a bike pic but im just needing some help on a bike. Basically im looking for a bike, nothing for downhill competition or anything. Generally cycling for fitness and losing some more body fat. Generally solid ground, but also some forest trails, front suspension is something I want, don't know if I need the back suspension.

I'd rather not spend a ton has to be a suitable price. Preferably as low as possible, £200-£400 or something like that. I did see the Kona Firemountain for £400 looked a good bike but would rather an oppinion from the experts.

Cheers.

Something like this would be perfect.

If you can, see if the 2007 model is available as it'll probably be cheaper.

I'll have a look. Ridden a specialized before, either the hardrock or rockhopper can't remember exactly but it was smooth and very light.

What do you think of Kona bikes such as the fire mountain? also carerra?

Konas- nice bikes but not so much bang for your buck compared to trek, specialized etc.

I'd consider a hardrock for that price bracket. Carreras aren't that bad- they're a halfords own brand. Might want to contact jonny//m (think its him?) as he works at a halfords bike hut iirc.

The only thing I had against my Kula was the Deore front mech.
Changed these to XTs and the shifters aswell (couldn't resist the 2008 ones), made such a difference super smooth gear changes, very pleased dont think I will need to change it now, feels really comfortable.
The best thing is I am losing weight which was the initial reason for buying it.
It is a 2006 model got it for a song at £350 secondhand, bloke hardly rode it, so was still in superb condition.
One thing I would like to say is, I cant understand is why manufactuers changes so much extra for better mechs, when they are not that dear to buy in the first place, seems all wrong to me.
In my opinion from what I have seen buy yourself a decent second hand bike, with the money saved update all the rubbish stuff yourself, to get what you need, sure it would still be cheaper.
seeing as servicing is only £30 for 3 yrs at Halfords its not really spending loads on a new bike.
As the poster SK07 having a £400 budget you can get a lot of Kona for that and have change, have seen Deluxes changing hands for not much more.

Well another thing I don't mind if it's second hand, im not one that demands it to be brand new only. I do want a rock solid bike that is going to last, I.E. very good parts so that I don't have to keep paying out to have it fixed like a cheapy bike under £100 would. Also of course needs to be able to endure, im not a thrashy user and take very good care of things but I don't want it to fall apart if im doing some trails or something.

Is ebay(competitor? if so I'll remove it) a bad place to get a bike? I am careful on auctions but my only problem with that is that I wouldn't really have a come back once I pay for it (unless there a big company).

You would have to trust that the seller has taken care of the bike. I just went to go for a ride and found i had a puncture(fixed it) but the freehub appears to be humped:mad: and thats when i take care of the bike! If i was to buy second hand i would be looking to replace all bearings and get the shocks serviced and probably new pads in the brakes + a good bleed.

Damn deore hubs:mad:

I just saw the Specialized Hardrock on the net for £330 new. It has hydralic disc brakes as well:

Specialized Hardrock Sport HYD Disc 2007

Says it was reduced from £430? Get it?

For experts who know there brakes, heres what they are:

Brakes: Hayes Sole hydraulic w/ 6" v-cut rotors
