Waterproof socks are not all they're cracked up to be. Water gets in, doesn't escape, so you feel like Jesus walking on water for the remainder of the day.

Hi fellas, I've got myself interested in mountain biking after a few trips to Ashton Court and a trip to Bike Park Wales.... I'm currently riding a 5+ year old 26" wheel Bianchi with pretty knackered front suspension and V brakes. I'm after a new bike as it just isn't worth upgrading!

I'm tempted by a full suspension bike, but being pushed by friends to go with a fairly high end bike (£1.5k or so) in order to get solid through axels, tapered steerer and such to future proof myself. Whilst this is tempting I'm not really quite sure I'm ready to go spend this much at the moment.

The other option I'm considering is seeing if I can get one of the ex-hire Norco's from Ashton Court later in the month to tide myself over (£350 or so I think). It would be a hardtail with less travel than the full suss bikes I'm looking, but still have bigger wheels and a working set of front forks that I'm missing at the moment.

I guess what I'm looking for is a steer on just how much I should concern myself with future proofing to new standards for fittings?

No such thing as future proof.

Through axles. On forks IMO a must have. Rear end depends on the frame some benefit more than others, some you cant tell the difference.
Tapered, i wouldn't worry about it.

If you have a budget stick to it, but i would say get a bike with standardised parts so in the future you can upgrade parts.

DAMN my eagerness, I ordered some bottomless tokens. They turn up and only then do I realise you can't fit them to dual position forks!!!! ARGH!!

Entry level dual suspension bikes start from around £1.5k.

If you're just getting started buy a good quality hard tail and if you enjoy riding it then upgrade later.

Getting a little frustrated with the setup on my Slash 9 now.

Ive set the rear shock to 30% sag which is 200psi

Ive set the front forks to 30% sag which is 95psi no compression settings.

From a standing point I can pretty much bottom out the rear shock with no massive effort, the front fork however I can get 75% travel tops, thats even with leaning right over and bunny hopping.

Problem I have is on a ride, the bike feels unbalanced! I have no air pressure chart to go off on the rear shock, everywhere says go off sag so I have no idea if the pressures are remotely close.

The plan was to lower the front fork pressures using the bottomless token, but being as I have this useless (to me) travel adjust I cant fit them.

Any tips guys?

Sounds like you need more pressure in your rear shock.
Fox Auto Sag for the win :)

Also, there is no point installing a bottomless token in your fork (if you could) if you are only using 75% of travel.
