Just clip in and do abit of steady riding, and if you are offroad and doing jumps, do some SMALL jumps and stuff like that first, at first I found em a git to get used to, but I soon got used to em, more power too and oyu got the up stroke too.

At the moment I have some DMR V12's fitted and they are pretty good, but I find my feet coming off the pedals on some jumps - resulting in me landing badly and sometimes falling off :D

I can't use spds any more because of my knee (no twisting tolerance, so one wrong move and I'd quite likely be back in surgery), but coming adrift with flats is a technique thing not a hardware issue- as nicely demonstrated by any number of downhillers, dirt jumpers, bmxers etc. You need to be jumping with the bike, at the moment it sounds like you're either jumping off it, or letting yourself be kicked off. Generally just loosening up and dropping your heels will help, since that way you'll absorb some movement before you part with the bike.

SPDs do have other advantages, but I think people get carried away with it, there are some interesting studies which suggest that most riders reduce the effectiveness of their downstroke when they apply force with the upstroke for instance. I used to ride clipless (and before that with toeclips) and while I do miss it sometimes it's not the killer app most folks think IMO. Though on balance I do reckon they're slightly better than flats for most purposes.

Yeah it's mainly used for commuting. I'm really starting to enjoy riding it on the cycle paths, so smooth. Just out of curiosity does anybody own one of these Tricross models?

I have the 2008 model

OK - so now the Wife is wanting to get fit (lose fat) and wants to join me for some XC riding during the week.
I'm skint and dont have the cash to buy her one, but she's only willing to spend £200 max.

If anyone is wanting to get rid of a decent spec XC bike and willnig to let it go for a steal, let me know please :)

Excuse the crappy quality, this is fromy my phone, I don't have my dslr with me.

Upgrades:

Hayes Stroker Carbon brakes
Hope Pro 2 rear hub
E13 Dual chain, tensioner and bash
Race face diabolus bars and grips
Kenda sticky 2.35 tires

I have some Wellgo V12 copies on the way (apparently as good as the real thing and half the price), a Met Kaos Helmet and some Fox Sidewinder gloves. Been out for a couple of 30 minute rides just on the road today, love how the bike climbs, can sit down and climb with ease. Can't wait to get the rest of my gear and give it a proper test on the trails!

Bah, whats up with you. Not on a 70mile ride but 35miles xc, normal shorts and t-shirt is fine :p

I can do 35miles in normal shorts, I'd not want to do double that though. Nothing wrong with lycra shorts. People are just scared to wear it.

I'm not scared of wearing lycra, I'm scared of other people wearing lycra, I don't want to see your bulgy bits :D

In all seriousness though, lycra is most comfortable, I'll stick with wearing something else over the top though ;)
