They are loud in comparison, but I dont really notice mine. If you're freewheeling for a long time, you're doing it wrong ;) Also handy alternative to a bell, quick backpedal and everyone gets out of your way :)

No idea about I9 to be honest, but I believe they're generally considered inferior to Chris King. At the same I wouldnt have Chris King hubs for use in the UK as they're not great in temperatures below zero. So.... Hope.

Collister,

You are talking 6" travel and at least 180mm disc front and rear for those long decents.

For your budget and 2nd hand you are looking at a 2005 SC Bullit or such like. Bikes like these are likely to have been thrashed to bits, so I would seriously consider upping your budget as much as you can afford or look out for bargains.

hmm I was looking at sx trails and things like that, what would you say would get me a good bike?

From Bike Radar:

08 sx trail 2 large with fox van 36, dhx 5, sram x0 mech, x9 shifters, slx cranks, specialized bar and hozzelfeler stem (actualy pretty light), dt swiss d5.1 on specialized hubs, springs fitted for a 14.5/15 stone rider (still have original springs). New in feb, had a 2-3 good rides, bit of asthetic damage(few chips here n there). Sale due to lack of use, 4x/bmx racing/training has taken over riding. Will be sad to see it go. £1350 ovno. email xxx if interested for pictures and offers, in Nottinghamshire area if anyone wants to see it in the flesh. Cheers

Specialized bikes are always cheap second hand as well.

Is it normal for my gearing to be covered in thick, sticky grease? (And not oil, I mean thick disgusting lubricating grease)

It seems this is how it was built up in the shop when I bought it and it's a right bugger, impossible to clean properly as dirt sticks to it like glue.

Depends what you mean. The grease that comes on chains is amazing and is really sticky. It shouldn't really be that thick though. What I see day in day out is gearing caked in oil so much so everything is black.

Ye I know the chain should be greased, but it's quite thick on the cogs and even with the hosepipe I can't get crap unstuck from the cogs.

Tempted to strip it all down tomorrow and re-lube it myself.

Get some citrus degreaser from your local bike shop or Halfrauds, it'll cut through it no bother. Just remember to re-lube it or it'll rust.
