Hi guys, just after a bit of info really. I currently ride xc, single track sort of stuff, me and a few friends are organising a trip to the alps in summer 2010. want to get a full sus for it :) at the moment I'm budgeting around 900. don't mind 2nd hand as long as it is in good nick.
Testing the waters at the moment because I know little about Full sus because I'm a HT guy. Rod emy friends cove hustler the other week, nicest bike I've been on. very nice !

Info please
cheers

PS: me and my mates did llandegla at -7 last year in nothing but shorts and t shirts before it was open, got back onto the carpark when we;d finished and people are starting to arrive in tight and overshoes!!! bit overkill

After a bit of advice with some gear issues I'm having. I'm having trouble getting the rear mech to line up with the sprockets properly.

I've tried adjusting the tension, but it seems impossible to get it to work properly on all sprockets; if it lines up on the bigger sprockets, then there's too little tension at the other end of the cassette, and so I have trouble shifting between the smaller sprockets.

Conversely, if the tension's right for the smaller sprockets, then it's too high for the bigger sprockets, and the chain keeps wanting to jump up onto a bigger sprocket at the other end of the cassette.

Here's a really rubbish diagram of the problem (not to scale, and I have a 9-speed cassette but couldn't be bothered to draw that many :p):

Basically, the "spread" of the indices for the derailer is too large. I've tried adjusting the tension, and the H and L screws, but the best I can manage is a compromise, so that the derailer's not perfectly aligned at either end, but it just about works. I can still ride the bike, so it's not a show stopper, but it's very irritating when the chain keeps skipping when I shift, especially on climbs.

Any ideas?

Yep, Bennah's on the money :p

Shifters and derailers are all XT, so shouldn't be any problems there (not sure what the cage size is though). I've already set the limiter screws correctly – all this does is prevent the derailer going over the end of the cassette. It doesn't fix the underlying alignment issue, as the chain still jumps when it's on one of the 3 biggest sprockets or the 2 smallest (depending on the tension).

Reset the barrel adjuster(s), (one on the shifter and there may be one on the derailleur depending on which XT model it is). Twist them so that the inside bit is flush with the outside bit you're turning, then give it one more full turn so that the inner bit is sticking out slightly.

Set the bike in the lowest gear and granny ring, then slacken off the cable bolt on the derailleur enough so that you can pull the cable.

Assuming that your limiter adjustment is correct, push the mech towards the wheel against the limiter screw and pull the cable tight. While doing this, tighten the cable bolt (it may help to have someone else do this if you've never done it before).

Test the gears.

If you're still having problems, use the barrel adjusters on the shifter/derailleur to fine tune the shifting.

I was going to say it could be the mech hanger. Mine is ever so slightly bent and it effects the gearing a lot. The chain tends to jump down a gear or two when there is tension on the chain. Having said that though, Ive tried to adjust all the screws (Hi/Low) and it still doesn't reach the smallest ring on the cassette.

Ive got to the stage of getting used to it now :p

If you ever have to adjust limit screws after someone has set them you must have bent something.

I tend to set the barrel adjuster at the middle of its travel then tighten the pinch bolt, wind the barrel adjuster in/out as requried until it's set.

hey guys, quick question regarding a Cateye Strada Wireless unit, got one yesterday, all calibrated and fitted to the bike, but my problem is with the magnet, i have Flat spoked wheels and the magnet isnt staying put on the spokes no matter how hard i tighten it, anyone got any ideas what i can do?

hehe, you are right Bennah. 8-10 weeks to go. Sitting at home browsing the net for this long is inevitably going to end up in a bike purchase of some sort that I don't really need. Currently looking at a set of Hope Moto's, must.....resist!
