Anyone got a cyclocross bike? Looking for recommendations (not spesh tricrosses). Must be able to fit full length mudguards properly i.e, have full rack mounts. Don't want a tourer. Bike would only be used for fitness and occasional off road action.

No way, Mag 21's... They brings back some memories :)

I had Quadra 10's on my first 'proper' bike, 46mm travel

n00by question here, but what are Carrera, Apollo, Raleigh etc like as brands?

I know nothing about bikes but I'd expect Kona, GT, Specialized etc to be far better and consequently more expensive.

For example, if I was looking at a cheap bike £200-£250 mark just for cycling to work etc, would one of the afformentioned brands be okay?

Try to avoid cheap bikes. They will just make you miserable - heavy, slow and unreliable.
Maybe try looking in classified ads for a better quality second hand bike.

To answer your question about the brands:
Carrera - imo they have a bad reputation because they are sold through halfords. Some of their top end bikes are not too bad.
Raleigh - not sure about current raleigh bikes? Used to be a big brand many years ago but have a low profile these days.
Apollo - never been a fan of these.

no they wouldnt because the specialized hardrock falls into that range and has been the best budget bike since time began !

actually... carrera arent bad. dont know much about the others so depends what type of bike your buying. mtb/road/commuter

The hardrock was my suggestion until I realised he's cycling to work.

Apollo are cheap *****.
Carrera are ok if built by decent workers.
Raleigh sell on the brand name but are generalyl crap unless it's a frame used by a diamonback(same people).

I'd take a look at claud butler urbal/explorers. The frames are nice and the spec changes quite nicely as it goes up the range. Specialized sirrus is another shout but would probably need to be second hand.

On the cheaper end of the scale you have the carrera subway which I and kieran ride and they are ok for what they are.

I'm looking too spend around £1300-£1500 on a full suspension light(ish) "all mountain" bike or a full bounce XC bike that isn't too fragile to take some knocks.

Everybody raves about the Boardman FS Pro but I've heard gripes about the frame on the Internets. Also trying to find a local Halfords that has one is bloody hard...

Specialised Pitch Pro looks OK but I'm not keen on the brand as everybody and his dog has one...

Look for last years models of well known brands. Unfortunately if you want a decent bike you've gotta pay. However, I got my wife £400 quids worth of GT Avalanche a few years ago in the sales for £200 so it is possible to get a good bike for a good price but please avoid bike shaped objects listed in your post (apart from Carrera they're not bad)
