For those that are going to Cwmcarn on the 27th: I'll be going on the Friday to Sunday doing some XC too. Camping with a few beers if anyone fancies it?

Please please please make sure your bike is safe. My friend had his V10 stolen while he was sleeping in the caravan and they broke into his van, as his father confronted them they sprayed a fire extinguisher in his face! It is rife with crime there, so please be safe dude.

Just thought I'd mention. I had an issue with the joystick on my Garmin Edge 705. Sent it off for RMA last Monday. And it came back (or at least a brand new one came back) the following thursday. Very impressed with Garmin's service :D

Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah trying before you buy is good. I'm still not convinced that drop bars are good for commuting.

I don't see how drops can be bad for commuting; they generally offer more positions and so more options for comfort than flat bars.

It depends how long your commute is, but anything over about three or four miles and I find drops to be vastly more comfortable.

If £450 is your budget after discount then you might want to look at Ribble Cycles for road bikes as you'll get decent kit for your money from them them.

Sora is rubbish and you can get better kit by avoiding "well known" brands like Specialized. I'd not got for less than Tigara on a road bike.

Yea Tiagra is my minimum too. I found flat bars hurt my wrists so drop bars are good for me :)

I commute daily on a road bike, it's brilliant, I went from commuting on road from a MTB to a hybrid to road bikes, it's miles better andcan get a cracking workout.

This week Ultegra SL is going on my commuter, can't wait, along with a set of Racing 5 Evos, should be a cracking bike :D

You get more hand positions that's true, however, personally I don't find being in an all our race position that comfortable for commuting. Then again my Focus is really a pure race machine so that may have something to do with it!

That's a bike specific think then. If I ride with my hands on the horizontal of my bars I'm pretty much in the same position as a flat bar hybrid. A lot of manufacturers re-use frames across their ranges for both hybrid and road bikes (the Giant FCRs and SCRs were a great example of this); essentially the only different is the handle bars.

Is your Focus a Variado? I use a Ribble Dedecacci for my commute of 17 miles each way and the geometries are not dissimilar.

I do wear it, but didnt during this winter. Its been so wet and muddy, causing you to ride so slow there's no need. Will start wearing it again as the soil is getting drier!

It is a Variado and I use it to commute (excluding winter) and the position on the flats is fine (same as riding my GT) but riding on the hoods makes my hands sore and riding on the drops puts me in a stretched out position that is great for speed but I'm not sure I'd do the whole commute like that. I prefer a more upright riding position for general riding rather than head down backside up.

Most people I know that commute do it on flat barred hybrids or mountain bikes with knobblies :(
