It is a Variado and I use it to commute (excluding winter) and the position on the flats is fine (same as riding my GT) but riding on the hoods makes my hands sore and riding on the drops puts me in a stretched out position that is great for speed but I'm not sure I'd do the whole commute like that. I prefer a more upright riding position for general riding rather than head down backside up.

Most people I know that commute do it on flat barred hybrids or mountain bikes with knobblies :(

I only use the drops when going through Richmond Park, rest of the time I'm on the flat cruising or the hoods for traffic and hills.

The commuting forum on Bike Radar is litered with threads by people who bought hybrids and within a year have upgraded to road bikes and moved to drops.

MTBs and hybrids do have their place; mainly in giving me a flashing red light for me to chase down and for that I thank them ;)

I commute on a Pinarello and I'm very rarely on the drops. I prefer riding on the hoods. Actually, most roadies I see with race bikes on my way to work are on the hoods too. :)

Yep hoods all the way, but the drops come in handy when there is a strong wind. I find hoods the most comfortable position for the hands.

I only ever used the drops when i was coming down 2 hills, rest of the time as said, on the hoods or on the tops when climbing.

Can anyone recommend a good cheap MTB road tyre? And size?

Was thinking about buying a road bike, but think I'll just try my old MTB with road tyres first.

Hello and help.
I'm looking to possibly take advantage of my company's cycle to work scheme and get a new mountain bike for not cycling to work on. It closes tomorrow so I need to choose a bike before then. I have a limit on £1000 and I want a hard tail mainly for cross country fun :).
I need to get the bike from a local retailer so I've been looking on the Evans website and another local shop and I've found:

Trek 6500 Disc 2010
Genesis Altitude 10 2010 (never heard of Genesis bikes)
Felt Q920 2010 (never heard of Felt bikes)
Giant XTC 2 2010
Bianchi Jab 7400 2010

I've not really read much about bikes for ages, so I'm out of the loop with the group sets and which is better than what. I know it would be best to test ride them first, but unfortunately I don't really have time.
Any suggestions on which bike looks the better on paper or any other suggestions??

Looking for a bit of selling advice to you guys that follow stuff on the bay.

I've got this lot for sale:

I've just completed a frame swap for a larger size and upgraded some parts at the same time.
Everything left over is for sale as follows and came on the bike ( if not stated ) direct from the Merlin original build :

Merlin Malt 4 Frame : Medium Sized

Frame has been looked after well, all the original Merlin 'copter tape is in place, it's been used for a bit of commuting, some Welsh trail centres and general bike paths. I've included a close up of the frame where a loose rock pinged the frame, it's barely grazed the paint in honesty. There's no cracks etc as you would expect. A missing bit of the "I" in the Merlin logo can also be seen in the picture, this has not impacted on the paint.
There is the normal bit of scratch marks and so on situated on the frame.
I had a new headset fitted on the new frame, so whatever the bike shop left on the bike is included, and the headset was a Merlin one when originally fitted.

More pictures of the frame can be found here : http://img10.imageshack.us/g/82113796.jpg/

Imperial grips - These aren't as clean as they look in the picture! ( Not original on bike, upgraded a year ago )

FSA Seatpost & Charge Spoon saddle ( Saddle was an upgrade )

Not 100% on the model of the FSA but seem seems to be a SL250 by picture, its has 20mm setback. Charge Spoon saddle, used for around 100 miles, small tear at rear of the saddle when the bike was put upside down racing to fix a flat.

Magura Julie Brakes

WYSIWYG with these levers, worked perfect when they came off the bike, no discs included as they where donated to another bike, if I can find it I will send some Blood with these too.

WELLGO LU-987 Flat Pedals in ( faded ) Black ( Not original on bike, upgraded a year ago )

I have it for sale on bikeradar as a job lot for £300, but from what I can see from old threads not many people are into buying a bike that's not a full build, or parts separately, and frames don't seem to be flying out at a great rate.

I'm considering the bay, but the fee's these days are pretty substantial for what they where, but obviously it's another outlet with a large audience.

What would people's rough guide for a selling amount on the bay be for a joblot?

Please please please make sure your bike is safe. My friend had his V10 stolen while he was sleeping in the caravan and they broke into his van, as his father confronted them they sprayed a fire extinguisher in his face! It is rife with crime there, so please be safe dude.

Thanks for the heads up.

 Rubbish. Garuanteed it only takes one kn*b to do something like that. But saying Cwmcarn is "rife with crime" if definitely very far fetched.
