[*]SPD pedals and shoes for a relative novice any recomendations on what to get? Would prefer not spend the earth...

Pedals... the Shamano 520s from the bay are usually the best vfm. Shoes... one problem with cycling shoes are sizes can vary a lot from different manufacturers. If it's your first pair best off going to a shop to try some on.

Just got a pair of white Shimano 520 pedals from the bay c/w cleats and free postage for £19.99.

Also got a pair of Shimano M121 shoes. I use Shimano road shoes and have found that ( at least in my case ) Shimano shoes tend to be very slightly smaller made as far as sizing goes. I'm normally a 42 in a shoe or boot and both my road and MTB shoes are 43's and fit perfectly. I tried a pair of Specialized MTB shoes on in a shop last week and in their case found the Spesh stuff to be pretty much "spot on" as far as stated sizes go. Hope that helps a wee bit!.

Best idea is to pop into a local shop and try them on there first ( thats if you would rather buy online if you can find better deals than your LBS is doing in shoes ).

Deon, if you wanna come down and do some uplifts with a few of your mates gimme a shout! :)

Will most certainly take you up on that offer.

Aye had a fun day! Wasnt expecting just riding downhill to be so tiring but it really did take it out of me. First run was a bit sketchy but it got better from then on each ride :D

Haha, told you so. Now you know why we push that little bit up the hill, between where hey drop us off and the start of the run.

Cwmcarn was awesome. Good to meet everyone. Did 2 xc red routes the next day with my DH tyres...not the best idea I have ever had.

Nutter!

Was good to meet ya'll and I'll let you guys know when we go again.

Funnily enough, I'm looking at the same thing at the minute. Right now, I dont think you can beat the Boardman Road Comp (650) or the Boardman Road Team (799) for value for money.

On another note, received some cheapo luggage scales off ebay today and weighed the Stiffee, 29.6lbs! Which I have to say I'm a little dissapointed with, was expecting it to be at least a few lbs lighter.

wow, Im sure mine is a lot lighter! what spec is yours?

I thought the same until I weighed it! Thinking about it further though, I could easily save 500g just changing the tyres to something more sensible (2.1), and 250g by going back to normal seatpost. So that'd be 1.6lbs saved already. Hope brakes arent light particularly with large rotors. It feels fairly light, just doesnt seem to measure up that way, at least on these cheapo scales. Not to mention its currently caked in mud, which probably isnt helping.

Well mine is red, didnt you know that red paint is lighter?
Pretty much the same components as yours, but mine is XT / XTR through out. I dont think the SLX is adding that much weight

To save 500g on your tyre choice you'll need to fit tyres that weigh 465g each, something like Conti Race King Supersonics.

Seat post :
The typical rigid seatpost on a mid-level XC race bike weighs about 350 grams. With the Thudbuster weighing about 575 grams (LT)/450 grams (ST) (exact weight depends on size), you will be adding only about 225 grams (LT)/100 grams (ST)

Your frame probably isn't the lightest either ;)

Yeah, maybe overstating the tyre saving there a bit. Seatpost would realistically be 200-250grams though (Current is 460). Frame weighs in at around 4.8-5lbs I believe!

Continental's claimed weight of all their DH tires are WAY off the real weight.
When I checked to see where I could save some more weight on my bike, I thought that the Continental Der Kaizer's are a God send.
According to their figures, I would have saved a whole pound by swapping my dual ply Maxxis High Roller/Minion combo to the Der Kaizer dual ply.

Check the real weight first before getting excited about weight saving on them!

Dont worry, I wont be doing any weight saving! Just intrigued to see where the weight is gained.

If I changed:
SLX chainset to XT (150g)
SLX Fr Der to XTR (30g)
XT Rr Der to XTR (47g)
SLX Shifters to XTR (40g)

I would only save approx 265g (according to shimano), even XTR chainset would only give you another 90g saving. After that, there's not a lot left that could be changed without making the bike a fair bit more fragile.

What can you guys recommend for knee/shin armour?
I currently have the cheapo TLD pads - but it's time for a change.
I really don't know what to get - all I want is that they don't slip! :)

Never heard anyone refer to Troy lee gear as cheap! :p
661 Kyle Strait, or Troy lee T-Bones for winnings

Fair enough, but just to prove my point anyways... check this out :)

Claimed weight: Rain King 2.5 with reinforced carcass and double sidewall = 950grams

The actual weight :p

I have some 661 Kyle Straits, they're the only leg protection I've ever had but I can say that they don't slip for me, if you do the velcro up tight they stay put, I can pedal with them fine too, they're a little hard to fit with my 3/4 Endura humvee pants but that's the only negative, if you can think of it as one.

Anything that's a sock design should do much better than just the pads with straps.

Edit: n/w just noticed you need shin armour too, take the pedal scrapes like a man you big girl :D

T-Bones are no good, I need SHIN&KNEE armour in 1. :)

661 Kyle Strait + 661 Veggie Shin?

Failing that, just get the TLD Lopes.
