You invalidate Specialized's latest warranty by riding your bike:

Also, its an 80mm fork that's on it, is 100mm the biggest I could get away on it before the handling screws up ?

My personal feeling is it would take a 120 without disastrous consequences, though it would feel pretty different. You have to question whether it makes sense on that frame though, I mean if you need/want 120, there's likely going to be other issues that bother you with the hardrock (like for instance the x-4 rear mech is junk in my view).

I can't say about warranty, though those big manufacturers spend a lot of time specing builds out with complimentary components, I can imagine them saying 'you've messed with the setup, you're problem...' which is maybe unfair but they do have to draw a line somewhere I guess.

The frame warranty would prob be void if you altered the Fork's travel in any way so unless I am mistaken you will be limited to 100mm.

On that note, is it worth the extra for an air sprung fork? The cost isn't a big deal (ie. I'll shell out £300 or so on a new fork if it's going to be spot on...)
 
+5/10mm is negligable (headset stack height). IMO +20mm over max is ok as long as you run extra sag. Then there is A2C to take into account. Saying that, if you don't know what you are doing and why you are doing it (rather than OMGZ I needs moar travel) then replace like for like.
 
air forks are lighter and can be set up much better for your weight / riding style

coil forks tend not to need servicing so much and are cheaper (usually)

to the dude that asked about Jackets - look at the endura convert, pretty cheap and works good

also wiggle have the DHB Droxford on sale which is pretty good (named after the village I grew up in too !)

Realised why the lower pivot is coming loose so often on my Epic Evo.

Still after 4 months you dont expect to have already replaced or serviced the following -

1. Front mech & hanger
2. Rear pivot service
3. Bottom bracket is nearly dead. Out of the bike and it looks horrid! as rough as a badgers crack.

Still I guess I look pimp on it. Got to look at the bright side of life.
Plus Specialized are the best compared to the rest.

I wouldn't trust an older Commencal (Crackencal) more than I would trust and older Model Xbox 360 (RROD) as your chances are about the same for the product failing.

Only the Glory in that list is rather nice, tad on the heavier side but I love the way they ride.

As for forks, Fox 40s are great forks, but are a lot of work and needs regular maintenance.

Exactly what I was looking for. I haven't ridden the bike long enough to see if I DO need to change the standard Suntour fork and, if I did, do I actually need one with "OMGZ moar travel" :p or is it just a BETTER fork with the standard 80 mm I should go for (100mm at a push) i.e. would a 80mm RockShox of some form be 1000x better than the Suntour??

I think before (if) I change the fork, I would be looking at the brakes as I had a couple of scary moments with the V-Brakes on Sunday there.... Shoulda went for discs :o

The suntour on mine is junk, I mean really nasty in just about every respect, it's not comfortable and it's nasty to handle on remotely technical bits - what it's good at is open to question. Hence the overdue upgrade...a cheap rockshox 80mm will likely be much much better...

Lets get things into perspective, in the highly unlikely event his frame breaks whilst riding it on the road then I'm sure Specialized would replace the frame, regardless if it had 100mm forks fitted.

As for fork recommendations; I would get some Rockshox Reba SL's. Lightweight, lockout, decent damping and rebound adjustments - £270

Thats not far off the price I paid for the bike in the first place :eek:

Not sure if I could justify spending that much on a fork for a bike that cost just a little more but cheers for looking :)

If you are serious about upgrading parts on the bike to make it better, disc brakes and some "real suspension" forks is where you should start.

That's exactly where I was looking. I will probably start with the brakes first so that I can open up more options for forks as all forks seem to be disc mount but not all have v-brake mounting


Thanks for the advice so far people, its been noted :)
