Climbing on a FS you need to stay seated as much as possible, if it's a prolonged climb, depending on suspension type and rear shock, lockout or increasing propedal can help.

The Maestro suspension really rewards sitting and spinning up hills. The pro-pedal is good on the shock too, and does really make a difference.

Sit and grind. It's the only way to climb on a heavy FS.

Did 26miles today and found a shortcut to the start of another local trail. Now to link 3 xc routes and a DH run into one ride.

What mountain bike should I get for XC?

I have £700 to spend.

I currently have a Hardrock Sport. It's 4 years old.

You mean I can't grind in the granny ring and have to give up and walk when it gets tough?

Grinding in the granny ring? Aren't you at risk of falling over going that slow? :D

Surely you'd be spinning in the granny ring?

I'm at risk of falling over at any speed. :o

Ever had a long climb where you are spinning away in the granny ring and the hill gets steeper and steeper until you end up grinding? A hill on my local trail is like that. Haven't cleared it yet! A pal of mine who races has only cleared it once so I know it isn't me.

I'd of given up long before that moment, I suck at climbing :D

Mind you, I suck at descending too :o :D

My pal was determind to do this section at Mabie (a reasonable climb) in the middle ring. He failed about 6 times and ignored me shouting to go in the granny ring. I went back down and cleared it first time by using the granny ring and 100mm travel at the front. He tried again and failed. lol. It's amazing how many people don't use their gears properly. Body position helps enormously too. Too far forward and you loose traction. Too far backwards and the front wheel lifts.

i just did mine this evening m8 due to fitting a new crankset with lower tooth rings, took a few attempts but got it running sweet in the end :)

I didn't have enough time to play around with it last night but i arrived at the Bikeathon early and got it seen to by an Evans mechanic. Friendly bunch they were too! The bikeathon was a scorcher but i wish i'd opted for the 52 miles as it's a pretty easy route. Next year it's either the London to Brighton or the 52 mile Bikeathon.........or maybe both :)
